I found a large massive horizontal Quercus gambelii – Scrub / Gambel Oak growing in the mountains. I spent several hours extracting the tree despite the cold hard granite guarding the trees roots. Here are some photos of the tree, now waiting to see if it survives. I do think it will as it has not wilted at all since collection. This is not going to be a tall tree when finished, just short and very powerful. No feminine pot this beast. I am looking for a cool name to name the tree? Any suggestions? There are more photos on my website of the tree: Here

What a great tree. I love Gambel Oak. There are huge stands of them out by Roxborough Park where I used to live. Every time I went hiking out there I could not help but envy after the crooked, gnarled trunks and small leaves.

Excited to see this tree progress. We don’t see many Gambel Oak Bonsai, which I think is a shame! 😎

Those trees are much larger then the ones in the area where my tree came from. Your area is a lot lower in elevation and the growing season is much longer which should produce much bigger trees but alas no boulders to be growing in for the most part. Great photos to!
