image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I noticed some odd white spots around the soil surface in a few of my trees, dig a little further and can see little things moving, not many and they get out of sight quickly. But I did see more white spots which I assume could be larvae? Are these root aphids? And if so how do you treat what is essentially under the soil surface? A soak? What's safe to use?

There was another thread with those in the last week or so. I dont think they are easy to deal with. Ill try to find the thread

I tried searching for it NY, but I cant find it...sorry

Thanks though. I've been Battling bugs all season. Normal aphids, scale, pine tip moth? Adelgids. It just never ends, how is this fun?

Thanks again. I Had read through that. My only concern is that he tried so many different solutions and never gave follow up on which may have worked better or worse.

I have used a weak malathion soak for my JBP that I suspected had root pests, though I couldn't see them. About 1t to 1 gallon, at 1-week intervals, for 3 weeks. I'm also using more Evo-Vie, which has iron.

The needles are sharp and healthy, buds are set, but color has been yellow for a year. It's greening up slowly.

Jonas posted a follow up last week or so, but nothing definitive yet.

Thanks BVF. how long did you soak yours? I followed up with Jonas and he said 2 minutes. I was reading elsewhere that a too short soak will really hinder effectiveness. I don't know if too long can harm.

It's all just disappointing because Im pretty sure now they were the straw that broke the camels back on an already week larch. And they are now in another J. Larch and the black pine you and I have talked about that I was preparing for fall work. Although my trees appear healthy I have to go over every tree thoroughly now because I only ever thought to check above the soil for problems.

well i went ahead and did the diluted malathion soak last night on about 10 trees that appeared to have weaker growth and/or had visible signs of the aphids. We shall see what happens.

How about the Bayer Shrub and Tree found in most big box stores. They offer two similar products and one is labeled for container plants and suposed to last 12 months.

Bonide also has a granual systemic product labeled for container plants which is used every 4 to 6 weeks (which may be better for your case).

These products are based on Imadicloprid (sp?).

I've used both brands with good results but have never had root aphids.

I may have to give granular a shot. I was pretty diligent this year and was able to wipe out problems quickly as they arose. But you can't kill what you can't see and by the time I saw white spots on the soil I already had a problem and trees were being effected. Another learning experience.

Anything containing Imadacloprid is banned on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) for retail sale in fact ALL granular systemics are banned because they usually are Imadacloprid or Acephate, both of which are banned due to the fact that bees are very very sensitive to them. So you wont find them for sale on Long Island anywhere, I know Ive looked and Ive seen the law that bans them.

Did you flush the soil with fresh water after drenching?

Anybody ever try beneficial nematodes? I've seen mixed opinions on whether they work for root aphids
