Seedling to root over rock?

I picked up 50 trident whips this past spring. They are around 24" tall, and about 3/16" in diameter. They had a ball of roots when i planted in growing beds. Some i put movement in and wired. Some i made forests through a piece of wood. I was wanting to do some root over rock, and was wondering the best way to transfer a small cutting. Do you let them grow out some until the roots get seperated, and larger roots start coming out, or go ahead and lay the ball of roots over a stone, secure, and plant. Any links, or help would be great. Thanks again.
