Well I had to get one :p

I figured I would start small and go from there so I picked up one from evergreen gardenworks. Really no rootwork just rearranging and potted it up with some A/P/L to fill in the soil that basically fell off and top dressed it some akadama and black lava. Then some light pruning and let it grow. Opinions and suggestions are appreciated I have a thick skin lol

I would wire the trunks and try to get some movement in them. Welcome to the Shimpaku obsession!

Thick skin or a Tecate wet whistle, same effects, some folks need more Tecate!

My process for decision would go something like ......

Since the first two branches are on the same side and quite equal in size, using them both is out.
Cutting down to the first branch leaves you no better off than you are now, since developing that into your final tree can be done now without removing the other energy.

The entire straight section with the high canopy becomes the first "tree" to look to for me, but it's still way out.

That true, I'd try to layer off those first 2 branches for .....to feed the obsession. One a year maybe?

Then wire the straight part. I guess you could wire it now if it's getting unwireable, maybe even leaving the first 2 in better positions to layer off after.

Since all 3 of these parts can be grown into what you have now in a couple years, but better branching and shapes you want, I see this, "something that is nothing yet", offering you 2 more options to find something in.

It's March, they say March is the time for cuttings! Root em! Said they need em in Jersey!
Lol!

Thanks guys for the input. I'll get some wire on the left lower branch this weekend. The right side trunk is pretty stiff and will probably need a larger gauge wire than I currently have.

I did get 8 cuttings that will hopefully take when I trimmed it up, just adding more stuff for me to do.

Next up is the Korean Hornbeam which will be fun 😁

So while wiring up the smaller trunk I was looking at this and this kind of struck me. Possible semi cascade with wiring up the left side to cascade down. Thoughts?
