Shohin Goji Berry

It will probably take off on you soon, and grow very fast again. Just don't baby this one, keep it in the full sun to help it recover. I think I will have to repot twice in a season if I want to keep it in a smaller pot. Mine does just fine in akadama...
Cool! What sort of winter protection are you planning? I was going to treat mine like a Ficus.

@Vin I keep mine in the cold greenhouse, these are very hardy to cold. I wouldn't keep it inside... Mine had a nice dormancy in the protection of the cold storage house last winter, I keep that between 28 and 35ish all winter. They are cold hardy to zone 5 in the ground, so with protection will do well up here. I don't know what your winters are like there. Nice that you got Owen to help you out, I was worried about this one for a while. But I've learned not to panic, and worked out what was wrong after I eliminated all the other possible problems. If you get temps regularly over 100, it may need a little shade where you are, I've read that. Mine is flowering right now...
I did find a little blurb about container growing these in a horticultural site. Maybe that's what happened to ours, it just stops, and then declines.

Gogi Berry plants can easily be grown in containers on your deck or patio. Goji plant roots like to grow deep, but the plant itself will stop growing once the roots touch the bottom of the container, so they won't grow as large as the plants grow in the ground. One advantage is that you may very well see goji berries in the first or second season, rather than the third, which is normally the case when they are grown in the ground.

We left ours at the old place, buried them in the landscape still in plastic training pots. Actually purchased through Home Depot online they were both vigorous BUT two weeks after receipt I did pot them in trainers in semi-organic mix. They were both in them for at least three seasons and a pain in the arse to keep trimmed... They were one of the few things that grew well on the North wall and I say that because you mentioned full sun - odd how these things work in different climates.
Edit: Second time today I stand corrected, Wife says she packed the pots as they were 20ish each...

Just finished wiring, the trunk is wet, so a bit dark to see, it started pouring out of the blue halfway thru... The current flowers are faded, but there are more coming on. Will take another shot if a few open together. Don't like this in an unglazed pot, but for now...Two angles of the front, and one of the flip side. When I put it in this pot, I didn't really think about where I'd want the branching to go, so it's not in the right place to have space between branches and pot rim as it should have. Oh well, next time.P1010883.jpgP1010884.jpgP1010885.jpg

This is my first attempt at cascade, I must admit, it's more difficult than I would have thought. I want to do a cascade that does have an upright apex above the cascading part so am keeping some of the upper branching for that. I'm also keeping a lot more branching than I think I'll wind up with down the road as I'm still unsure of what this tree will look like in a few years. I never had that perm btw....did you?

Hu hu...

You can't control genetics: I look a lot like my father but inherited the very thin silky blond hair from my mother.

And both my sons have such strong hair that it's like horse mane, even if their half breton, half "auvergnate" mother has black hair.

Very nice little tree Judy. I love the trunk.
Hope you find a good pot that you and it will be happy with.

Finally today I noticed that the tree was dormant enough to take the leaves off and wire and reduce the branching. I'm happy with it for now, I'll see how the new growth is next season, I don't know these well enough to go any further with it yet.

Judy, I know you passed this along to Dave...I've not put any wire on my goji. It had long internodes with no proper lighting in the greenhouse earlier waking from dormancy. I pruned back hard...and it's just grown. Scott Lee told me to wire early...I didn't because of being so busy. Pondering to cut back real hard again...but, seen this and ponder...allow to harden a bit more and wire. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Currently they don't seem very flexible but are green. Want to bend over on themselves if bent. Like a pinching of the branch.

Judy,

while I like Alain's idea for the shape of the cascade I like yours much better. It seems to fit the nature of the tree better. Don't change it, at least for now. Great tree.

@JudyB ...well I wired it. It made some cracking noises...so we shall see if I lost what I wired...or if it was strong enough to handle it. It was just hardening off...time will tell. As you say...grows like a week. So if so...I just regrow and wire sooner next time.
