This is a tree I dug up about 6 or 8 years ago and put into a large grow box. The little research I did back then led me to believe this was a Siberian Crab Apple. It had small pale pink flowers on it when I dug it up. It has only flowered one time since then. My Plant Identification App tells me it is an "Apple" but not what kind so, I am going with Siberian Crab. I was still working at the time I dug it up, so it didn't get much care, other than watering and an occasional prune. I retired several years ago and now have time to devote to some trees. Last spring, I decided to remove it from the grow box and potted it up in this 14X10X4 plastic training pot. It grew decently this summer but it never really took off. My thoughts are it was making new roots since I pruned off a large amount of them when repotting.
Now that it is winter, I have time to think about what to do with this tree. The twin trunks mirror each other too much and are too close in size to become a twin trunk. I am toying with the idea of separating the trunks and trunk chop the right hand trunk at the red line and eventually create a tree something like the blue line. The left hand trunk I was thinking of chopping at it's red line and trying to create a semi-cascade since I do not have a semi-cascade yet.
What would be a good time of the year to do the trunk chops?? The standard early spring before bud break??

This was the tree back in April. The right hand trunk is about 2.5 inches at the soil line and about 22 inches tall.
The left trunk is about 1.75 inches in diameter and 14 inches tall.Apple Bonsai 2 copy.jpg
