"....." - squirrel

While I drank my coffee I watched a squirrel tightrope walk from the phone pole in the alley to the sumac near the house. My dog did a good job of scaring it so the squirrel launched itself into the neighbors yard.

She's very locked in when protecting her yard from squirrel invaders.

"Holy shit! This shady spot under the twisted old spruce might be the best location for a burrow eveeeeeeer!"
-Chipmunk

One day later...

"
I could have sworn this was where my burrow was?!?! Am I losing my mind?! *digs another burrow*
-Chipmunk

Two days later...

"Wowwwww! How did I not notice the pine right there, maybe my burrow won't keep collapsing in that soil...time to move!"
-Chipmunk

"Awfully nice of him to put running water back here. Let me show you how to use it. Just bite through this black bit and you get a nice drinking fountain. The hard white bits are great for sharpening teeth." - squirrel

"Those oak seedlings are flags that tell me where to dig for acorn caches. No acorns in this pot? I'd better chew off the flag so I'm not fooled again." - squirrel
"We've got a false flag over here, boys. Nothing to dig. Take it down" - squirrel

I sure don't want to admit that they may have saved me some time or from some disappointment down the road...

They have caused me some frustration over the years as well including breaking branches that were two to three years in development and of course eating oaks and oak saplings out of their pots.

My mother-in-law started feeding them which at first put me into a frantic frenzy but in retrospect I do believe it helps because they seem to leave the trees alone more.

I'm starting to wonder if squirrels aren't just the arboreal version of beavers. I mean, the buck teeth, the specialized tails, the cheeky cocky grins...
...the bloodlust for fresh wood (saplust?). I mean, basically, nature's wood chippers.
Well, them and woodchucks. "Hey you woodchucks! Quit chuckin' all that wood!"

I don't know what it is, but the varmints have been out of control this year!
...Brunswick stew, anyone?

I believe most of the tree chewing is to keep their teeth sharp and trim. If they don’t, their teeth will overgrow and become useless. Biggest problem I’ve had with them is they use the sprinkler flowerbed stand up sprayers that have medium hard plastic sprayer heads. They will chew through one in a week and then start on the next one. Have to replace the sprayers with the really rock hard ones they can’t chew.

"Mmmmm maples! I love maples, especially in the spring. If I had a hot plate I'd make maple syrup!" - squirrel
Oooohh! Maple squirrel might be tasty!

It sure would be terrible if it got hung in a "random" loop of bonsai wire strategically "dropped" near its favorite tree.
