I was considering posts mentioning giving their trees "morning sun only" and realized I had never really considered where the sun was rising on any given day. So I thought I would make an app for tracking the sun's position. :) Then I realized I don't have any coding or astrological expertise. :( Luckily, someone else does and has made a nifty little tool that is free to download from the Android Market. :) Apple has comparable ones for free. Beware the $30 version.

It's been accurate as far as I can tell. May be worth the DL if you're so inclined. There is a paid version if you'd like the additional functionality. The ads are unobtrusive so I don't mind the free version, tbh.

Why is it some trees should have morning only sun or afternoon/eve only sun? I have never noticed in nature any tree species hiding in specific shadows.

Well, then you're not looking very closely or at least not grasping what you're looking at. Understory trees, like japanese maples, hornbeam and others seek cooler, arfe more common in less well lit areas of the forest, than are higher light species like pine.
