Basic participation rules:

  • To keep it accessible to all: Any starter material / species / origin allowed, including seed, airlayer purchased and collected material, as long as it is not clearly set up as raft bonsai.
  • Aim is to show what can be done with normally sub-part trees.
  • Special focus on being creative and original.
  • Keep it fun: no trees of over 100 USD.
  • Aim is to learn together, so document the key steps as much as wanted but as a minimum the material at the start, with annual updates.
  • Start anywhere between October 2025 and the end of 2026.
  • Tally at the end of the 2030 growing season in northern hemisphere [does this do justice to Southern hemisphere growers or Is the growing season there too far to start?].
  • For fun add virtual stickers of accomplishment, and who knows whether we decide upon an additional price for the winner in 2030.
  • Thread naming convention [username] [species] Raft contest.
What do we understand when we say raft:

  • A main trunk has fallen over, and may sits on the ground, and may have rooted in multiple spots.
  • Multiple trunks come up from the one fallen over, each developed as a small tree.
  • Crowns may have fused into one canopy, like a forest-style.
All of the above.

This timeline only gives northern growers ( with the possible exception of PNW) 4 years of growth because we are at the end of our growing season and really can't start things now. Might be better to start a new contest in spring next year

Or finish 2031?

I got excited...
We can extend the end time or scrap this one all together...

I collected something from my garden already resembling a raft. I dug it up and stuck it in a pot in June and did zero work on it. Would that be allowed to enter?

I'd say yes, but at this point of time I am not sure if the contest itself is vaible.

Well, I've never done a raft, but I've been wanting to do one for some time now, and have a really amazing pot that I wanted to build a raft for. So I have been brainstorming a lot of ideas for about a year or so. I may do a couple, I want to try something I haven't seen done on any rafts, but I'll keep it to myself for now.

Just extend it rather than hold off? Gives folks extended preparation time.
