The Rosemary Thread

This a pot I made for it last winter. 9" X 9" X 7" ID. Not sure about going to a smaller pot. Might be a little to busy.

Dave,

that's one beautiful Bonsai, mind if I keep a copy of the image ?

Looks like one of our coastal trees.
Really a beauty, both of them.
Thank you.
Good Day

Thank you for your kind words. Please feel free to keep an image. What kind of coastal trees does it remind you of??

Love the tree and love the pot! Already taken an image to my hard drive.

Lovely....Really like the giant rock with trees on top.

Excellent work on the Rosemary!

I've only tried one and it didn't turn out so well over the winter-my fault.

I leave mine out until Nov 1. They couldn't take the rest of our winters here. They seem to enjoy the chill down. The rest of the winter is spent in a greenhouse at 50-60 deg. F.

Upon reading this...I am pondering a greenhouse. But...also am considering just putting heat into my gazebo. Though that would mean...I would have to move my juniper to another location to winterize. (With the arctic air we had along with wind chill I was glad it was in our gazebo wintering) I also have my rose tree in there...so I need to see if it could handle being in a room 50-60 degrees. Because I surely can't winterize it outdoors...

Our gazebo has windows...and an upper part that is also windows. Not sure you can tell from the photo. But do you think if for temporary...I added heat in here...a Rosemary bonsai could handle being wintered there?

I am surprised at how cold hard Rosemary are! We got down in the teens here this past week a couple nights in a row and for over two days I don't think it got above freezing (not a big deal for Ohio I am sure, but it is uncommon here!) - and mine that I have planted by my front steps to use for cooking, didn't miss a beat- no brown leaves, still growing like it is mid summer from what I can tell! So, I am sure that one would be fine in a heated Gazebo... Probably in the Unheated gazebo, though if it is in a pot I don't know quite how cold it can get.

You have a BEAUTIFUL home BTW...

That says a lot! Still doing well after getting that cold for you. I would imagine I would have to have some sort of heat...for we do get down into negative numbers here. And always 10 degrees colder than elsewhere...(microclimate I believe the nursery folk said since all our stuff blooms later than it should) And this past winter with Arctic Air...GOODNESS! I was so glad I winterized the juniper in the unheated gazebo.

And thanks for the kind words on our home...

Darlene I would try a small one and bring it in the house when the temps get into the low 40's high 30's and find a cool bright space for it indoors for the winter. As soon as it warms up to over 40 consistently put it back outside. My mom in NJ has had one this way for years.

Dave What species/cultivar is that Rosemary? Seems there quite a few out there

I don't have a cool bright place indoors...with my tropicals. I make sure that the sunroom doesn't get below 60's at night...and it is warmer in the day. That is the coldest room I have. That is full of windows and bright. I have above the window in the kitchen...but...my kitchen isn't cool...but comfortable. It sounds like these need a cooler period. Which I am afraid my home to warm. I could get a small one...and see how it does. For...I enjoyed peace of mind having the juniper in the gazebo when that unusual arctic air came through.

It'll probably be happy with your tropicals. My mom keeps all her plants together over the winter in the dining room next to a big sliding glass door.

Thanks Bob! It'll have to be a small Shohin then...that Bottlebrush takes up so much room next to the tropical hibiscus. (hibiscus is my husbands favorite it survived being tossed back in July from the tornado that blew through the lake association)

Although I am not certain yet what species/cultivar that is it does seem the general thought on Rosemary is it will be happy with our Tropicals which stay no lower then 65 to 70f during the Winter. As he said any Sunny location with mild heat will do well. That may be cooler then others keep them but it seems to work just fine for us for a lot of years now.
