Here's an informal broom in the making. A hornbeam I picked up last season, I recently planted it out in a wide tray. Im aiming for more height and thickening.
Im using guy wire to push n pull movement into the leaders, especially the left leader...
bit of a scaffolding job atm

Sage brush. Did a full report on this one yesterday. This part is still oversized a bit, but will be suitable for its development over the next couple years. I’m still waiting on a custom pot from a local Potter that will make the native species all that much better. I was able to get quite a bit of wire on this one and bent thicker branches into place using wet paper towels to soften the wood. I’m really excited to see how this tree looks, once the thinned out foliage pads start to fill in.

Korean Hornbeam. Just root pruned. And I forgot to photograph the roots. Very flat roots though. 1.5” thickness, well fibered with fine roots, a solid woody fully-rolled-over base, and now about 10” in diameter. The tree just finished a re-boxing and a cool shower. As usual this is the first of my trees to bud-swell in early spring even though there are likely cold days and nights ahead.

Oh…to clarify. When I said 10” in diameter I was referring to the root ball. Roots are less than 1.5” depth and circular about 10”. This is a healthy growing tree.
