Three Months in the Life of a Chopped Nursery Azalea

Awesome, thanks mullet. There weren't many pictures of them as bonsai on Google so it was nice to see another one.

Mine is not much to look at either, hopefully this years growth will fill it in more and I will make sure tho to prune too late in the season. This is only its second year in a bonsai pot.

All of those little leaves are new after the cutback? I don't see how that's "just starting to come back" Unless that happened really fast in the past few days.

It may also be the fact you left some foliage where as I didn't leave any. That and your climate is warmer, or at least should be.

Yes, the tiny leaves are the new budding, it was cut back on May the 5th. The larger, full-sized leaves are the mature leaves that were left on during the trim. I wanted to keep those branches so I cut all of them back to two leaves. The first chopping it got there was little or none in the way of foliage. It think yours will be OK, I know it is hard to look at it sitting there with no new growth. Azaleas are really tough.

My final question is what kind of lighting is yours under after this kind of work, like under a bench?

If I cut back to nothing, i.e., no leaves, I put it under a large oak in the back yard (just gets dappled sunlight). until it developes some buds, then it is back on the bench. If I leave some foliage on it, I just put it back on the bench. The bench that the azaleas are on gets a couple of hours of morning sun and about afternoon sun after 2-3 o'clock. It seems to work, they grow pretty well.

Awesome tree Mullet. Thanks for sharing. I love seeing people's progressions with raw material.

Cheers

Love the base on this thing, just love it!

Update:

It was time to reduce the root mass on this one as I never got around to it last year, so, I got to it this weekend. Here are some quick photos of the process. The pot I put it in is just a training pot, it will get a better one next year. What do you think?
