I think it’s time for me to move my first tree (ilex serrata) out of my grow bed. I’m very excited, but want to be certain that I’m not doing this prematurely. I’m happy with the size of the base.

Some wounds are still healing from some cuts last year.

I’m going to groundlayer for roots this spring, and I’m not sure if the groundlayering would be better while it is in the ground.

If you are happy with the trunk size, and the tree responded well this past summer, I would think that it could go directly into a slightly, too big bonsai pot. I must say it has plenty potential for a first tree....... Good movement and base. I'd be inclined to cut the top of the trunk down past the uppermost branch to encourage back budding.

Ground layering in a pot gives you more control over the roots and makes separating the layer easier.
