Was planning on starting some layers and root approach grafting for the first time and was looking for recommendations on the type (and brand) of tools used for these projects. Specifically, I see folks using what looks like a chisel to create the cradle for the layer and something similar for the groove for the approach graft. I was going to use an exacto knife to cut the cradle, but have no clue what to use for the graft. Suggestions?

These are what I use.

And these.

I usually use a budding knife or grafting knife for both jobs. Allows for different sized grooves to suit each approach grafted branch.
The longer blade of a grafting/budding knife can sometimes get in the way when working near branches but has the strength and length that exact does not have so usually much easier to use for both grafts and layers.

I switched from grafting knives to box cutters for grafting.
I'm not switching back.

A few days ago I saw a Youtube video about air layering maples and a special tool was used like the one in the picture below.
I have never seen this tool before but it looks like a nice tool to have if you do lots of air layerings.

After watching the video I did a Google search for more info about this tool and it looks like it is made by Koyo bonsai tools in Japan.
