I am curious, where do most of you guys get your training pots? Do you have a favorite vendor or are you not extremely particular? I have a larger tree that I'm going to need a training pot for soon. I would build a box but for this size it would be easier to buy.

I use anything that gives the roots room to grow. In the past, I've used plastic totes, crates and litter pans. Now, I'll use cut down plastic nursery cans, wooden boxes, or bonsai pots that I've got laying around.

If you see my pics, I use dish pans ($1.95 at Walmart) and bus tub (from $6.00 at Ace Restaurant supply depending on size).

Do you just drill drainage holes or cut the bottom and replace with mesh or what?

Sounds about right. Guess I'll be looking around for something that fits the tree.

edit:

This is the way I've done it until now, but I just thought you classy types would be using some handcarved plastic pots or something :P

I build wooden trainers, and line the bottom with window screen, gives a lot of air exchange...
I have a couple that I'm not using if you are interested.

Non, no, no.. This is all wrong! The question is what kind of dirt do you put in the pots!!! Jk

That sounds about on par with what to expect out of this thread lol.
I use 8 inch bulb pans. they are cheap. $2.00. See link below. For larger stuff I use restaurant bus tubs.

I have several of those around the house back home that I might be able to utilize. Where do you get said bus tubs?

Google bus tub. I get them in gray to attract less heat. Then drill a bunch of holes in the bottom. They are pretty indestructible and hold up.

I'm having a little trouble reading the charts. Is there any difference in the AFLAT models except dimensions?
to enlarge the text, press CRTL + and the type should increase every time you do that.
To answer your question, the difference appears to be dimensions. Just pay attention to the size of the holes in the bottom. You dont want to have to put in sheets of cross stitch mat to keep soil granules from falling through.

I second the Anderson Flats for pre-bonsai and yamadori. They are about 5-6 bucks each depending on how many you order.

I build my own wooden boxes with 1/4" screen on the bottom. You can make as simple or complex as you like...any size you need. Materials are cheap. I can post a couple pics if you like. I just made a couple out of recycled 1x8 redwood fencing. Best of luck:)

I used scrap pallets and cut the (relatively) straight slats out. It may take several to make a good box depending on how beat up the pallets are, but you cant beat free.

So you acquire pallets and then cut the slats out, possibly from several pallets to get enough wood to make your box..... and you feel this is free ?

I don't know where you are going with this ed, obviously he's using "scrap" pallets which are free to him.
