I've got a red maple that I purchased to do a trunk chop. It had a really bad spot about 36 inches up the trunk where the bark had rotted out because of what they had used to keep the tree stable at the nursery. I had intended on waiting to prune it till at least it lost all of it's leaves, but a new problem has arisen. When it rains, the tree bleeds a black liquid from several spots on the trunk above and below the bad spot. Some are about 12 inches above the soil line. Anyone know what this could be? I have concerns that it's canker, although I can't find any pictures that fit my tree. If so, the recommendation is to prune, which would mean a trunk chop now while the tree is in leaf. And I'm not even sure that's going to fix the problem. Any suggestions?
