Elm Leaf reduction, and a tree with the leaves the size of the last leaf next to the copper BB. That last leaf is taken directly off the tree. I have tridents with leaves that small and smaller still coming out on trees. Unless you post a picture of a tree covered with the small leaves it doesn't mean much. I have been working with tridents pretty much most of my bonsai career, 34 years and enjoying a trident covered in the smallest leaf you posted would be a feat indeed.

My trident produced a few miniscule leaves (even smaller than the smallest leaf in the series, but not typical for even the most refined trident maple bonsai) that were the tree's final attempt at new growth at the tips of a few branches just as the temperatures became too low for growth and then turned cold.

Japanese maple (the species) reduce pretty well, but nothing like trident maple.

Need to get a chinese elm from a more northern grower. I bet some are could be wintered similarly to the above maples and do well.
