Trident maple Rootstock

I was wondering if any one has personally tried using Trident maples as rootstock for grafting Japanese Maples or know of any studies on the subject?

Even if botanically it was possible, the vast differences in growth rates and bark would make bonsai attempts pretty difficult...if not impossible.

Plus...the ease of propagating both species through layering and cuttings to get a tree on it's own roots makes me wonder why one would attempt it?
