As luck would have it I was given 8 oak trees of various types (gamble, live, scrub, holly) for use as bonsai. Unfortunately they were all in pretty bad shape.

They are about 15-20 year old trees grown on nursery grounds their entire lives.. and we’re still in 5 gallon pots.
I’ve only ever seen such a root bound mess in the case of Boxwood, but those are known to like it that way to a degree.

As there is little information regarding oaks in general for use as bonsai, let alone the various types I have here, I went about things as I would usually; very carefully.

Many large taproots had to be removed and what usually would take an hour took me two, minimum.

The trees were cut back hard when leaving the nursery, with atleast some branching left to help during recovery.
The root pruning was fairly extensive with an estimated 30-50% removal of roots, depending on the tree in question. The largest roots (1”-2”) were sealed with cut paste.
All of this work was carried out mid-late spring.
Within a week all trees are showing signs of new growth.

I’ll be posting updates as they come along..

Jordan.
