Took a look at the old procumbens and I see rot at the base.

It drains like a sieve but apparently not fast enough. Hard to believe as the water goes in and out the bottom VERY quickly.
ANYHOW..... it's too wet.

What would you recommend?

My idea/s are either:
1. Repot in equally drainy soil but position the tree higher.
2. Repot in even DRAINIER soil.
3. Leave in present pot but scrape off the sawdust and topsoil to make more of the nebari exposed.

And.... in any case.... Do any of the work NOW?

(It lives in sunny spot)

Sawdust???

There’s your problem! Lol!!!

Deadwood and bark don't like being constantly moist, which is what happens when it is always in contact with soil, regardless of the soil's composition... even the hardest and most well preserved will eventually rot. The best you can do is pull as much soil away and reduce or completely prevent any contact with the deadwood and/or bark.

Thank you, good sir.
You have restored my faith in the forum.
For a bit there, I thought everyone had got together to gang up on a helpless old man with a juniper problem.

I should have considered the wisdom of posting a question on a Saturday when so many of the wags have started their beer. :p

Thanks for the reminder... tapping out for a few hours ;).

Man, this sawdust looks like aphid structures built by ants I found this summer. If you find ants, I would treat against aphids.
