hello ladies and gents,

New to bonsai, and the forum, and I will make sure to post in the new member forum when I get some more time.

I have 4 trees going right now, and I came across this poor little guy in Walmart this past weekend. I couldn't let it sit there and die, so I bought it. I repotted it immediately and gave it a much needed watering.

My question is, what type of tree is it?

My guess is Fukien Tea, but I really don't know.

Thanks all, and I look forward to searching and expanding my knowledge.

Best,
Dustin

The Latin name is "Malsai". :)

It is hard to tell because it looks like the leaves have some sort of fungus or are drying out and distorted/ shriveled.

How long have you had it and where did it come from? It was not labeled where you bought it?

Haha....yeah, it was. It just looked so sad and dried up, and I had a pot empty so I said "what the hey"

I got it last weekend, and it was at Walmart.

Here are some photos of it after it was reported. It is still a sick little tree, but I'm gonna keep it in ICU and see what happens.

I was thinking Fukien Tea, but I do not have one myself and was hoping someone who does could chime in...

+1 on privet, but it looks unhealthy and 'off'.
Much how I feel right now after eating City Barbecue ;).

I had never heard of a privet, but after looking it up, it is very likely. I will update this forum if it pulls through. I believe it has some new growth, so it may make it.

Thanks by the way for the replies. I have been reading like crazy on this forum, and have realized above all things that I know even less than I had thought on bonsai....but I'm looking forward to learning

Most certainly a privet.. Bark is a dead give away. A very fungi infested on at that.
Good news for you is that you can bare-root, repot, apply fungicide and this species won't skip a beat.

Yep it's a privet, they got that right now at wall-mart in the 'bonsai' section, that's part of their 'Privet is the new ficus' kind of thing.

New pics are way better!

Interesting.

Bam. Welcome to Crazy.

Thanks Sorce. I have been reading a lot. Got some goodies from Stone Lantern at home waiting for me in the mail. Probably bought more than I needed to at this stage of the game, but hey, I'm new and excited. Just trying to keep the trees growing and alive at this stage

I would guess that it is one of the evergreen, sub-tropical privets. In central Ohio, I would give it some protection for the winter. If you can keep it indoors in winter in a cool room that hovers above 32 F, I think it would do well. I would not expect this one to survive -15 F the way some of the deciduous privets can.

I'd side with privet as well, my Fukien tea is pictured on my picture, it's leaves have small whiteish dots and have some semi-serrated edges. Here is a close up... They are kind of dirty from my battle with aphids but they are finally going away. image.jpg

I'm glad it's been identified as privet so it saved me the embarrassment of guessing brussels sprout.

;)
