When is the best time to carve (jin, shari, uro)?
- for conifer evergreens
- for deciduous
- for tropical (and other broad leaf evergreens)

I am thinking when sap flow is least across the board, then if possible...
- during warmer days for conifers.
- after fall for deciduous (much easier when there is no foliage)
- anytime for tropical

I'd appreciate any corrections and/or further input.

Thanks!

For conifers, if the the wood is already dead, then anytime...if live tissue is involved, assuming the work is more then just jinning a small branch, then during the growing season.

Additionally, I avoid carving until the tree is well-established in the pot.

I've always used the tried and true Japanese time table of late winter.

Any more input? I am planning on doing more carvings soon since it seems spring is just around the corner for us here. (can you hear my trees trembling???) :D LOL

2 things to consider in an ideal situation. Try to line these two up as best as you can.
1)whats best for health of tree-growing season for deciduous or just before, dormant for evergreen/conifers. Ultimately same time as heavy pruning time.
2)when does wood carve the best-conifer, when its wet, ideally green. deciduous some are better wet/green some are better dry.
