Would love to see how this goes. Local nursery has a ton a thick Sabina’s but haven’t seen much about them.

Really? From what I’ve read and seen, Sabina can make great bonsai. Not only wild trees, but nursery stock can lend itself great to making dramatic deadwood features.
What types of Sabina do they have?
I have 5 ‘scandia’ Sabina’s because for some reason they grow a lot and then clearance a lot at my favorite nursery. B5B9D09E-66C0-4F51-BF7C-7D76F464F097.jpeg
The Scandia has fairly course feathery foliage. It’s ok, but I’m sure there are better options. I have a small ‘Acadia’ Sabina that has tighter foliage.

I have to check but they had a handful with very nice trunks and movement. And they were all marked down to 12 bucks or less.

Further developments. I read that it’s a good time for Jin and Shari on junipers in my region. I hope that’s true.
A nice trunk line I hope to exploit. White for Jin /Shari 1AD9EE49-1E5A-45F8-9C5A-7DC0B48DE240.jpegTook the lower large branch as the one I want was stacked directly above.
I also continued the Jin down the trunk for a good start at Shari. Hopefully not to much at once. 12E707E1-1BE6-4443-864A-30D0A43968FD.jpeg

Looking at possible Shari work to come. But first a repot will happen this spring to look at the roots. 😄

Well because I can’t help myself from styling trees, this one got worked up top instead of a repot this spring. 😬
A lot of staring and editing with photo markups put me to its current basic structure. 67686E0A-F1A0-43C5-ADA8-CF221AFB5FCE.jpeg
started chopping away. D1A6AE11-9963-4DC8-ADA0-7B29EFAF4840.jpegB57C0631-3936-4B65-AAC7-027B419BAE59.jpegBlacked out for one idea.AAAC8B7D-8D24-4F1C-ADFF-617DC6A021C1.jpeg

But…As I chopped away I came upon a new front. More to prune back, but I can wait…..maybe a little bit. 🤣

I believe they have Sabina Monna? Might not be the right name but I believe that’s it.

I grabbed what I believe will be a beast of a tree provided I don’t kill it. Curvy with a very thick base.

Nice. I guess they referred to as Calgary Carpet Juniper?
yeah they have a nice variety.
I have 3 or 4 clearance Sabina. Mine all were marked Scandia.

I may actually enter it into this with a one year late start. I picked a few up just for the hell of it and they have been sitting around doing nothing.

I’ll post a picture later.

Pictures didn’t come out great it’s actually a fair amount thicker than the lighter.

I decided to put this one in the ground for a couple years. Buried in mulch and leaves for the winter. 😊
IMG_0153.jpegMy goal is to reinvigorate the tree and hopefully get some foliage chased back closer to the trunk.
I hope to get some strong runners going before pruning back significantly to promote back budding.

If all goes according to plan, i’ll yank it out the following spring, pot it up and have it in time for the deadline.🤣
