Okay, so I'm big on doing my own research, and I try not to ask too many questions until I've done some reading. However, this is my first foray into bonsai, and I don't want to screw up and kill my little trees.

What are the big points to know about wiring cypress?

I have two threadleaf false cypress, chamaecyparis pisifera filifera, which I think must be a little unusual for bonsai because I haven't found very many online. I've posted pics of them on two other threads, so I don't want to load them a third time. I want to train them into a Weeping style; I think the long hanging leaves will look neat if I teach them to hang down. So I'm not looking to do any extreme training, just emphasizing what the plants are doing on their own.

Thoughts?

I like it.

But my first thought by was, "another thread!" Lol.

You can Probly wire it from now till fall of you're careful, maybe choose a couple to cut off next year, that go too up. Leave em for now.

If you do use stakes and guy wires, you can slowly crank the guy wire in to make the bend safe and slow.
Unless someone hits it I guess.

Then again, you can make it so those can jump off the stake, whereas, a wired branch is a bit more susceptible to damage from Knocking.

Please post em up when you're done!

This is an excellent project. I think the species is perfect for this!
It should look awesome!

Ya, I know, I get a little thread happy. I just figure, once the question in a thread has been answered, a new question calls for a new thread. amiright?

I had read that you can wire cypress in the spring or fall or both, but I was a little concerned about wiring this year, on account of the massive pruning I did in April. I read that wiring is stressful for cypress, and I don't want to over-work them. On the other hand, I'm dying to get started shaping them. What do you think?

Funny you should mention someone hitting guy wires or wired branches. You may have noticed that one of the trees has three main trunks that go outward at pretty severe angles - one of the trunks I cut all the dead branches off. (I'll probably jin that later, I think) That happened because the cypress is planted right next to my driveway, and I backed over it with my truck while I was ripping out the rootball of a gigantic Japanese Yew. I utterly despise yew. So ya - if interesting development results from adversity, I think being under the wheels of a 94 Ranger qualifies. ;-)

Don't worry, you'll be sick to death of pics of these things before I'm done. :-D

Yes. I dig a new thread!

I think it could take it. Just be easy with it.

Nice!

So, due to monetary concerns, I won't be able to purchase wire for another month or so. Will mid-october be too late in the year to wire these guys? Should I wait for spring?
