Seems like many collectors have techniques and honey holes they'd prefer to keep quiet after a long and costly learning curve. You may try to contact a couple of those guys and offer to be grunt labor for a day, if you were willing to wear a hood and ride in the back of the van to the secret location.😂

Or….if you search here, @grouper52 has shared a collecting technique called “papoose wrap” used by Dan Robinson & his acolytes and explained it in a lot of detail. You can read enough to get out there and find your own spots to give it a try.

Yes, you can find many threads here discussing collecting techniques and aftercare. Finding the site to collect from - that's the trick.

Randy Knight is one of the best collectors, for sure. Dan Wiederrecht & Steve Varland of Backcountry Bonsai collect some very impressive trees in Wyoming. Matt Spinikken collects native stuff up in Wisconsin. In my area, Ned Lycett collects some amazing Sierra Junipers. Jeremiah Lee collects Sierras

You need to contact a local bonsai club. Sorry, but I spout this line like a parrot, but it's still accurate. The Minnesota Bonsai Society is based in Lake Elmo, MN, which looks to be only a short distance from you. Many of the clubs I know of have spring collecting trips with experienced members and pre-approved sites digging trees native to your area. There are likely more than a few folks in that club who have collecting experience in your region.

Techniques you might learn from folks like Randy Knight and the Backcountry guys are likely inappropriate for species you have available in Minnesota, IF they even respond to your inquiries (or if you can find email/contacts for them). They're collecting ancient Western conifers which require much different techniques than many other more common species.

People simply don't share their secret fishing spot. People like Randy Knight and Todd Schlaffer collect on private property. Randy once said he took someone out collecting and the person later took 25% of his business.
