Am curious how many of us are actually maintain our own yard/garden. I currently have someone does it and never really happy with the service. In past years I have many pots broken and bark damaged from them. They don't seem to care much about potted plants that we called children. Am curious how many of us actually do the yard work yourself. I am thinking of starting doing this myself as I don't have a big yard in the back and the front isn't all that either.
Having someone else does it also make me nervous about getting the tree stolen.... as they are exposed to others.
Alright, show us your yard and tell us if you are the one maintain it or someone else. Has there been any incident with broken pot and damaged bark.

We have a good sized yard, almost 2 acres. My husband is pretty anal about it and spends half the weekend in the summer mowing, weed eating etc. I'm in charge of the flowers and my trees. Our house sits down a long driveway and we live in a very small town, so the only damage I've ever had to my trees has been due to squirrels digging in the pots.

I'm 67 and I do all my own landscape maintenance except for large tree work. That requires a certified arborist. The landscape is all native or well adapted species. There are narrow strips of lawn in the front yard that serve as paths and to keep the neighborhood happy. Maintenance is mowing, quarterly cut-back and weeding, mulching in the fall with fallen leaves, and occasional transplanting or removal if I decide I want to change something. New plants get some extra care in the first year, but after that it is survival of the fittest. In the absence of rainfall I irrigate some areas close to the house about once a month.

The photo was taken last summer when I was having a disagreement with a troublesome neighbor who complained to the city code inspector. I won.

Lawnmowers make excellent gas powered trend-mills. Mine gets used 1 hour 3 times a week.

I have a guy that mows and my wife and I upkeep everything else. He's very good about being careful around the Bonsai and we do our best to landscape in such a way as he has easy paths for mowing. Only complaint is that he doesn't always mow in a way not to throw grass clippings into the garden. Fortunately the wife maintains a steady supply of kids who are happy to exchange weeding duties for music lessons.

I'd throw some pics In but we have only been in our house for a little less than three years and there was zero landscaping when we moved in. Everything is very small and unimpressive.

I'm 76 and a Mater Gardener for 40 years, so my city lot is packed to the gills with special things. My philosophy is to see no soil. Ground covers with Hosta, Lilies, Phlox, Columbine, Roses, Azalea, Boxwood, and about 40 special trees including 11 Japanese Maple a 9 Dogwood varieties interspersed. a7.5.JPGd.JPGk.JPGm.JPGq.JPGw.JPGz11.JPGz15.JPGz16.JPGz28.5.JPG

Every shrub, blade of grass, flower and nearly all trees I planted. Built the shed, the shade cloth and retaining walls.

I love mowing the yard but just don’t have time, so we have a guy and his crew come every week in the growing season. They do a great job and I never worry about theft or damage from them. This is my bonsai garden area from this summer. I built and set all the benches, did most of the landscaping (largely consisted of clearing out a bunch of old and overgrown stuff when we bought the place a few years ago).
