how did this last layer go? any updates on these trees?
its an interesting thread
I apologize about leaving this thread unattended.
It turned out the bigger two year old cutting did not air-layer as properly as the one year cuttings,in fact barely at all.
The one year wood must be more conducive to the vigorous callousing which allowed me to separate the layers in two weeks.
The older would on the 2 year struggles to callous like that,if at all.:eek:Got me,I don't know why.
When I get moved into my new place ,there is definitely some room to grow seedlings and cuttings and make air-layers like this.Zelkova and Chinese elm too.
Perhaps buy a bonsai too,to keep me occupied.
Starting from scratch for sure, but I believe I am better experienced now to do this.

That's interesting. Didn't you ground layer an older tree with good results? Makes me wonder what's differerent and makes the trees respond differently.

I've got an Elm seedling that I collected last year that I'm going to try and make a broom with. I've been re-reading your broom thread for pointers.

Ever really ground layered anything before.I air-layered the cuttings with great success at the base, but only worked on one year old cuttings that were whips about 4-5' tall.
Good luck with your elm!

No Elms for the Growing Elms thread, just a bunch of zelkova.......I know,Grey bark elm,but I thought it be better to put zelkova info here:)

I have about 50 cuttings soon to be potted and 90 or so seeds planted.
Seeds should sprout uniformly ........cause' they already were!

Will have one year stock for making broom layers next season.
Also will plant many zelkova in 8" bulb pans and wire shape very early and let rocket away to the sky ,the leader......to thicken the bonsai.
Want at least 2" trunks on them.
Seems anymore I just want bigger bonsai.
Zelkova can make this happen relatively fast!

Here is the month old cuttings, the seeds and the sketch.

About 25 cuttings

Kept 25 cuttings hat had good roots mostly. As they get bigger,I will just uproot, trim the roots a tiny bit, wire shape them and plant in single pots by themselves.
