Thread to document my prunus mume.

I never thought I’d find Ume in South Africa, but last June while on the road I pulled into a tiny nursery out in the countryside near my home. To my surprise I found a nearly leafless tree covered in small white flowers. I took some photos and posted a thread here on Bnut asking if what I had found was indeed an Ume. The next day I returned to the nursery and picked up my first Ume 😍

I cut it down to the first set of shoots at bud swell and planted it in one of my grow beds

Mid growing season. I cut all of the initial shoots that grew from the trunk back and was rewarded with even more shoots! A few weeks later I wired them to set initial movement. The tiny green shoot (in the first photo) also bolted and was a clear candidate for a leader. It was bent sideways with a guy wire.

End of season. The leaders are close to 2.5m tall and have thicker the trunk substantial! It’s still hanging onto the last few leaves and has a single flower at the moment, with all of the long shoots covered in flower buds ready to pop in the coming weeks. After flowering it will get cut back for next season. I’ll leave it in the grow bed for another season.

Recently I found out about another local nursery that propagates and sells ume from a bonsai friend of mine, so 2 weeks ago I finally made a trip out there and crammed 5 more Ume in my car. 4 whites and 1 pink. I returned last weekend and picked up another one that wouldn’t fit in my car on the first trip 🤣
They were the equivalent of $6.88 each.

I’ll document these as I get to repotting and working on them in spring but here’s a teaser of one of them.

Decent trees for bargain price. Honestly I would buy ten if available with that price tag. But Im addicted to flowering trees, so it explains it partially.

Great trees. You’ve inspired me 🤣. I found a ton of them near me I am going to go get this morning. No more putting it off lol

I would love to see that back bud well for you. Please keep us posted. I have been hesitant to cut mine back hard. Maybe I can get some inspiration from you!

Me too! I cut off basically every branch besides the tiny little shoot at the top and the lowest branch. I actually don’t want to use that lowest branch, I’m hoping to get some buds on the end of the main trunk to build some low hanging cascading branches but decided to play it safe and use at least 1 remaining branch.

The tree had started to back bud on the main trunk higher up this week before I chopped it down to what you see now, so it seemed happy enough to pop random buds on older wood.

My big Ume, cut back and ready for the season. Did an approach graft towards the backside of the tree to add a branch on the left/back, I plan on removing the existing large branch on the left/back once/if the graft takes (the graft shoot and the thick upward shoot come from the part I want to remove)

I cut the lowest right branch back further after the photo, leaving only 2 buds.

My big Ume responding beautifully! I defoliated the first few leaves on each shoot last season to ensure they produced leaf buds

Buds popping on the chopped leader. Hoping for a few lower down but I played it safe and cut back to visible buds last weekend

Smaller one cut back to the first branch starting to grow. Need to put some movement into the green shoot, not sure what I want to do with it yet though. Any ideas?

Planting angle? then consider options. Can always change the root base on something this young.

Early spring update, all my Umes are growing beautifully 👌🏻

Big one in my grow bed, the approach graft on the back has produced loads of callous under the cut paste. Almost time to wire the new shoots and give it a cut back

Semi-cascade with loads of new shoots since initial cutback and repotting 1 month ago

Update on this smaller Ume.
I wired the trunk 3 weeks ago, as well as cutting back, wiring and partially defoliating the primary branches.
It’s responding beautifully 👌🏻

I snapped this branch twice while bending it. Nothing a little CallousMate couldn’t fix. Gotta love an Ume!
