Help for Black Pine backbudding

No the deciduous will not use fertilizer in the winter. Then follow the pattern of fertilizer for the particular tree in your collection

For example All single flush pines do not get fertilizer until the candles have hardened off to keep the candles smaller. Then fertilize at a moderate pace through the year once hardened off

On the other hand double flush pines basically get large amounts of fertilizer in spring and small through the remainder of the year so as not to push large candles

Just when you have time can you explain me why ? I'm also convinced about the NPK, but why ...

I read that it's the result of burning coal to heat homes in the autumn in Britain during the 19th century. Burning coal releases all kinds of stuff into the air, including nitrogen, which falls as acid rain and fertilizes plants. There's no need to add nitrogen to your soil if it's falling out of the sky every day.

I want to say it was in Bonsai Heresy, but it might have been another book.

Perhaps the simplest explanation is plants need nitrogen to grow during winter.

And trees still grow during the winter, primarily the roots ….and to grow new plant cells Nitrogen is needed to build the amino acids that make up the DNA… also the cell membranes, mitochondria etc critical protein components are built from nitrogen-containing amino acids.

So slow release because one doesn’t want to use a fast release fertilizer during the winter that might cause the top hamper to push a lot. Consequently the recommendation of Osmocote Plus/Pro slow release fertilizer.

Hope this helps ….

Thank you so much, very clear

Use Osmocote Plus moderately or something similar as a base all autumn and through winter. Add half strength miracle gro every two weeks and the tree will be very happy in spring.
Did you already started the autumn fertilization, here we still have 24 c°, and I am using your spring/summer routine

Honestly, we pretty much have continued as usual since late spring. Only difference is time between liquid fertilization. For conifers will add a week between. For deciduous will stop about end of Sept mid Oct, depending on the species and forecast.

Pre Storage we apply fungicide. May do it at least once in late winter before ramping up the fungicides for spring especially. all Roseacea and Junipers.

Once the conifers get put to bed (November sometimes) they get a final Osmocote application. The deciduous are just tucked in.

So sorry. Actually the conifers always get Osmocote before winter, lower dose 1/2 unless in development as it’s a 6 month fert.

I use your protocol, with half dosage of Osmocote plus + Humic/fluvic acid and kelp at half strength one week on the soil the other week on the soil plus foliar

…and your trees are starting to show it too!

Good job!

Should I do something to manage them ?
No. This tree is beginning to ramify. Let these grow out. This is a good sign the tree is getting stronger.

Later, if you find there is more than two buds on the branch ends you’ll remove all but the two best placed buds. But not until one is certain which are viable and will grow out for sure. Often some die in the winter or get infested. In the latter case, keep your eyes peeled for small circular holes in the buds.

Thank you, but I will follow some of yours past advice, I will leave all the green next season to build up strength, this season was a big work on the plant.

I Spray with a systemic antieverything in autumn e winter and end winter, there is no sign of life in my plants ahahahahah
