Really shows everything I love about the species, amazing fluting, some cute knees and simple magnificent age..
I also adore this tree! I truthfully can't tell what it is. I suspect a maple? Nonetheless it's gnarly design is breathtaking, I really have so many questions about this tree and would've loved to ask it's creator about it, I feel like it's very much design choice and not even slightly accidental. I want to ask about the inspiration but also why not attempt to hollow the tree completely.
This is wild. That lizard must have a serious investment in that tree to make the trip all the way up from Florida. There was a lizard in the ficus that won best tropical!
This used to be Mel's. He donated most of his collection to the university. They're just now taking the rest of his shohin. He only playing with mame now. Thanks for all the photos! Really like a bunch of these trees….
Of course the Kaho Satsuki has got to be one of the very best. But it was a display tree from UMich. Does anyone know if this was a Prof Melvin Goldstein product?

Funny, I had one hitch a ride on my Grewia (2016) on the way home. Sadly it wasn't very hardy for my climate. This is wild. That lizard must have a serious investment in that tree to make the trip all the way up from Florida.
Woah! I hope that little guy stays with the tree. He won’t do so well with the Rochester climate! There was a lizard in the ficus that won best tropical!
There were three maples like that on display. The other two were in leaf. It seems like people are exploring what can be done with scarification/deadwood on maples. @Cadillactaste would be proud.First tree is like: I ran out of cut paste and started to embrace the scars??
I really have little idea what is going on here but I am fascinated.
Did anyone get some good photos of @mattspinniken big cedar? That tree seems to have some serious presence. I think all it was lacking from what I could tell is many more years to ramify branching.
Thanks! There was also a photo on the display next to it- a craftsman making a daiza, bent over a low table. Looked exactly like the stone!
I've often seen a photograph of a tree to later realise it's much larger than I first thought. But this may be the first time I've thought a tree to be very large turn out much much smaller than it actually is. Quite impressive.
A chameleon. They’re all over the place along the SE coast. Extremely nice ficus. TooThere was a lizard in the ficus that won best tropical!
