Bnut weekend challenge

I think the only thing you loose with a collective thread is the progression of the individual tree as it would be documented in it's own thread.

I agree as well. We don't know if any turns out to be a gem (of information) and we don't want to lose that amidst thousand posts.

Please note, you really don't want to create "instant" weekend trees. That's not what it is about. It's about what you are planning to do or continue planning to do.

So, this is a "weekend challenge" which is not done on one weekend nor as a challenge. I do like the idea of individuals presenting the styling their trees with commentary for others to see and make comments, though.

forgive me if I'm early

I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I work this weekend so I'm showing a bit early. I was bored last night, so I made a little fence with pecan twigs and small wire. This morning, I gathered a bag of moss and added some to this little boxwood, installed the fence, then cobbled together a little swing from a piece of wood and a yo-yo string. :) Kokufu-ten here I come!

Not the kokufu-ten, the Sukufu-ten.. ;). The Sukufu ten is for the "workers". The artists who actually have worked on and styled their trees. The Kokufu-ten, you can buy a tree, not do the work and enter it.

Thanks Rob, good looking out. :) Sukufu-ten here I come!

be careful when swinging near a fence as you might get your leg caught

heres my in between the weekend challenge. Had the pleasure of working with Italian great Mauro Stemberger yesterday on my peach tree and a privet. Both trees are urban yamadori and have great characteristics naturally. Neither one has been wired before yesterday. Only selective pruning after original collecting. It was my first time carving on the peach and he made me do it entirely myself which was great. He seemed to want to style it though after i wired.

Last Weekend

Here is my project from last weekend....a yellow cedar carved burl and a young vine maple...my idea was to repot the maple into a larger grow pot but when my eye caught this burl I noticed the same gentle curve and thought ...why not ;) I did treat the inside and outside of the burl with wood hardener (inside)and preservative outside even though this wood does have some natural preservative properties.
Cheers Graham

Nice composition.

My weekend is pretty full right now.

On Saturday, I will be cruising over to Santa Cruz on the coast to visit all my friends and take in the Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai exhibit. Ryan Neil will demo Saturday. I probably won't stay for that though, too much shopping to do. I sent some emails to one of my friends over there and he is bringing me some trees to look at for purchase so I should have something to post on that.

Sunday, I will work on this pyracantha. This tree will be thinned, and old leaves removed. The pot will be cleaned and the top will be mossed. Someone might get the idea that this tree may be slated for the Kazari. Who knows......

The trunk is five inches across and the tree stands 24 inches tall.

But I think this is better than having to look thru a hundred threads. Nice idea.

Off topic, I know. But Dorothy, where are you from? What is your first (and second) language?

Libby

I'm gonna guess Croation, Ukraine or Russian:eek::eek:

LOL...like B-Nut with its how many specific forums? ;)

Honestly, A good topic can be easily bookmarked. A bookmarked 1000 page thread is not that easy to search through.

Bjorn is here this weekend...dunno what we'll be working on yet, but there will be photos.

For now it's going to be keeping these 20 freshly-repotted trees from freezing the next 2 nights. Grrrrr....

Brian beat me on this one. Yes it is definitely a Bjorn weekend. Unlike Brian I do know what I have decided to work on and can't wait. Will be taking four trees to get Bjorn's opinion: azalea (from John Geanangle), Caitlin elm, trident (from Don Blackmond) and a collected yaupon (from Brian Van Fleet). Eager to see what Bjorn thinks and which he thinks we need to work on.

These are terrible photosof the collected yaupon but all I have with me:

this week's project

dorothy. brings back memories.

working on two lychee display slabs. both have been planed to reduce thickness from one inch to .5 inch making them lighter and less bulky. original outline shapes were altered with a jig saw adding movement and interest. the edges have been textured with power tools and rotary wire brushes then darkened for contrast with fire. today's task was to sand tops and bottoms with four grades of sandpaper. if a predicted rain storm does not hit tonight, this weekend's activity will include sealing the sanded surfaces, more sanding, followed by multiple coats of finish. sharing some pictures of the process

best wishes, sam
