Which do you prefer for cuttings, collected yamadori, and potting layered trees?

Thinking about planting some JM cuttings soon.

Thanks

Ok. Thanks. I thought I'd read that you can take Japanese maple cuttings of new growth in early summer?

They can but will need shelter this winter. Two months ago they would be two months stronger and still require a shed or garage in the winter but would have a better survival rate. Brian is pointing out there are optimal times and with any softwood cutting the sooner is usually the better ;)

Thanks everyone. I don't know why Turface was even in my head. Maybe Dario used that for all his collected trees? By the way, where did he go? (Without starting WWIII here)

He's on a pilgrimage to Mt. Fuji. When he gets there he will study at the feet of a hermit bonsai master. He will learn all about the old Japanese bonsai bushido. This will take the better part of 6 years. From there he will take an intensive from Boon to learn how to wire a tree properly. At which point he himself becomes the bonsai master he always knew he was destined to be.

Chad, don't know where Dario went but 40yrs of propagation has led me to believe that perlite or pumice that has an extraordinary gas exchange per moisture retention is hard to beat. Depending on where you are and the relative "drying" conditions a little peat moss might have to be incorporated.

Dario's over on Facebook running a group called "Bonsai Odyssey". For the most part, it's a nice, active, polite group.

Oh, and as above, perlite.
