Fat Ume

Really nice. Funny, I recently was bitten by the shohin bug myself. Large trees and getting older don't seem to go very well together :)
You may have something there.... but then again, I also just got a massive crabapple from Don, could be the heaviest one yet.
I still like the big guys too.

Here are a few shots with a few more flowers opening. They all seem to want to turn their faces away from the viewer, like they are shy.
Doubt that there is any way to keep this from happening, but they are lovely anyway.

My dad told me it looks like popcorn, and he is right! So here is my popcorn tree...:D

I like the second photo as a front. How's the scent? Mine are like vanilla and cinnamon. Almost too much in full bloom.

This may get a new angle at repot, it has some nice options. The sent is not strong, a bit like cloves. Maybe when more open it will be stronger. Are the different types different scents?

Very nice tree JudyB.
I can not see the flowers well because the light source is little strong for the white flower. You may close the camera aperture one to two stops.
I think we can compare the flower scent more accurate if we put different trees together. So, you may send your tree to my garden! ;)

I'll try this with my camera. Also getting used to a new photo program as I have a new computer and the iphoto is different now. Thanks bonhe!

do they always bloom this early?
it sounds really fast to me, here normally somwhere in feb
i believe last year was already march

This tree was in Houston up until a couple months ago, don't know if that has anything to do with it. The other ume I have, is not as far along, and I've had that one for a growing season.

I have some ume growing in the ground at the moment. With it being unseasonably warm the past month, I think they are confused because they and some stewartia I have are blooming. The ume for me usually bloom later in the winter.

Mine bloom at different times. The Contorta has bloomed the last 5 years or so in December. The Omoi No Mamas have bloomed later in January.
I think it depends somewhat on the vigor of the tree.

Here it is today, did some camera adjustments, I think the flowers look better now. This is the angle I think I'll replant to. Still more buds to open, it's like a daily treat.
I think that if the weather here gets too cold in the greenhouse, I'll try the fridge. For now the greenhouse is staying plenty warm...

It looks beautiful JudyB.
I think your camera light meter got some affection from the dark background, so that the white flowers were overexposed a little! If you use automatic mode, I suggest you should try to use manual mode! However, I love your setting.

Nice, just saw a couple opening on mine today. May need to borrow the misses' camera...:p

Very nice, Judy. Flowers opening are a daily treat. I like the different patterns they make.

Judy,

Did you turn it clockwise from it's original position?

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the apex is moving away. It's really hard to tell from a single picture.

A photography tip that I've learned: step back a bit, then use the zoom feature to fill the frame. I think the smaller focal length of the zoomed lens helps with perspective.

Note to all the photographers: I'm sure my "explanation" is poor or completely wrong! But, using the zoom thing works.
