I went to a bonsai show recently and couldn't walk passed this one:

Here it is after i cut some old needles out to let more light in:

There are buds all over it and just wanted to clear out the long needles between these buds:

The candles have already started to extend, and they look healthy to me. You think it would be safe to decandle this summer?

Probably. Is it Shohin sized? Are ou planing to keep it small?

You need to repot it into Boon Mix asap. I mean, in the next couple days. Do a half bare root repot. Pot or colander, it doesn't matter. But you need to start getting the root ball shorter and wider. Did you see my video where I was working my JBP rootball? Eventually, you want to get it shaped like that.

Hi Adair, it's 30cm high and the nebari 10cm. I'm planning to keep it that size, no bigger.

The trader a spoke to said not to repot it this year for some reason. I'll double check with him as to why. I do want to get it out of the sandy mix it's in now. It'll need to be a big pot to start with because it's full of root by the looks of the drainage holes:

I wonder why he says not to repot? The shape of the pot it's in is all wrong. It's encouraging downward roots rather than radial roots.

I wonder if he's afraid the poster will kill it. Allow him a bit of time with horticulture under his belt so he's not blamed for selling poor material? Poster has been a member here for awhile...so I can't see that being the case, so that is odd.

The candles look to be quite a bit more extended than I would like at the repot time. That might be the reason.
Very nice JBP.

HBR. Cut the bottom off flat. Tease out some feeder roots so they stick out 1/2 to 3/4 inch on the non-bare root side.

On the 17th March I repotted this, it looked like it had been slip a few times without any root work:

So I worked the roots out and cut back half the root ball. then into a pond basket in Boon mix.

And then here it is on the 25th April lots of long healthy looking candles, what do you guys think?

The last two pics show the branch that has been cut that would have been in a perfect place. There is a small bud that has poped at the base of the branch further to the back that could be moved around to the side more but I'm not sure how this would look on shohin? Approach graft it maybe?

Considering the extensions on this JBP, is one decandling method better to use than the other (stub vs 30 day methods)?

I'm thinking of using the 30 day method on this one due to the size of the strongest candles, what do you guys think?

Not much difference in the outcome of the two methods. Doing the candle cutting in stages just keeps new growth on the tree longer, so it has more foliage to hasten new bud formation. This one is strong, so all-at-once should be fine.

Agreed, candle prune all shoots the end of this month beginning of next, depending upon where you live. Mitigate length of 2nd flush by controlling / plucking # of needles.
