The Vin Tree

Or, since that curve may be a bit too dramatic right before the new leader, I could take off the branch in red, chop at the red line, then make the little branch at the blue line the new leader.

This. Exactly this and nothing less.

You really think so Brian? The way the trunk line comes towards the viewer from the left is a little dramatic.

I like this view because of the depth it adds to the tree. I hate to toss out all of the work Vin has done to the tree though.

Yes, I really do, and I wouldn't hesitate for a second. When it grows out, the "dramatic" look will have smoothed out, and meanwhile, it can be easily obscured with your choice of foliage.

And to argue by putting my best foot forward, I did nearly the same to a relative's first bonsai tree when his widow gave it to me. He had it over 50 years, and before I put it in my car, I took it from 20" to 6". Which version of this tree would you rather own:

I like Vin, I know him, he and his son have even been to my house. You won't hurt his feelings.

Personally I like the original front, the other angle seems to lose the masculinity in the low branch as its drifting off to the back. Nice tree and I'm sure it would be pleasing for @Vin to know he can continue to see this tree progress

I've sold a few trees, not many, just a few. Nothing makes me happier than to see another interpretation of a tree that was in my care. I'm a firm believer that each owner along the tree's journey needs to put their signature on it if they want to call it their own. I see your vision, please feel free to carry it out if that's the direction you want to take it. I'm behind you 100 percent.

EDIT: FWIW, I typed this before BVF commented.

Stick some Hitman shades on it....
Pop it in a Ranchero.

Then....the Vin Tree!

Lol!

Nice!

Oi, I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. I like both options to be honest, it's really tough to decide if it's worth it. The original front is so "ready to go." It would just need branch placement.

This new front would require a whole new start. Would it be worth it? Maybe, but I wouldn't know until there's no turning back.

I feel your pain brother! This bulge always bothered me and your new start would solve the issue.

But then again, as you said there's no going back.

The other option would be to repot it at the angle I talked about early on and wait until next year before committing to the chop.

Honestly never even noticed that, but now that you pointed it out I'll never forget it lol.

The thing about its current front is that the first branch is just kinda awkward. As I said, the current front is very one-dimensional. The proposed front gives a sense of depth.

But again, oi.

Not sure if everyone's liking that first picture because they think that's a better front, or because they support Vin's packing job.

Hmmm.

Both!?!?:D:D:D:D:D:D

For me, I thought the pack job was choice man. Tree is great, too. But you have to say "peanuts, Piimp!!!;):D:D:D:D:D

Think it needs a branch where the bulge is?:cool:

I've thought it over for a bit and I've made up my mind. I love the direction Vin has taken this tree, but it's time I put my own spin on it. Here's my plan for it:
20170520_205915.jpg

I took the tree and turned it counter clockwise a little bit and found this front. Using the second, smaller branch, as the leader and not that first one, I found a new leader. The first branch just didn't feel right. That first branch on the right is gone. I tilted the tree to the left a little bit to cover up the ugly root that will eventually be removed anyways.

Again, this is just a virt and nothing has happened to the tree yet, so feel free to give me your thoughts.

I was at Bonsai West today as they had a spring open house celebration. As they do normally this time of year. I bought something unexpected, and had wine during the garden tour.

So no photos.

Maybe put some wire on some of those shoots up top. Form an apex with a shoot or two.....you have developed some nice figs that I've seen here, this particular one just needs a chance to really grow the first low branch to get mas macho.
