Hey guys, where do you all get your screen for sieves at? I've been debating getting a typical set with the 3 screen inserts or building my own. I like the idea of compact storage and exact measurements with something premade, but also like the idea of doing it faster with something self made lol

Just wanted to know where you guys source from and thoughts.

Also, I know I've seen a thread like this somewhere or tutorials on how to build them somewhere, if anyone has a link to them can you please post it? I cant seem to find it on the forum :oops:
 
Use rolled wire LIKE chicken wire (square holes best). You can get it at home depot etc..... for the holes look for the size you want (1/4 inch, etc....)

I also buy mesh of different grades and make the sieves myself. I know not everybody has the tools, space or time, but I found a place that would sell hardware screen in the size I needed so it was the most inexpensive option for me. In times of desperation I've used colanders.

Thanks for that link. My wife gem mines and that's gonna work perfect for her. I made her one of 2x4's but she bitches it's too heavy. Thanks!

I have an old pallet laying around somewhere. I've been leaning towards the idea of just breaking it down and using some chicken wire/ mesh. This is Oklahoma after all, I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find a little store willing to sell me a yard or 2 of different sizes.

The smaller is just under 1/4 inch and the larger is just under 1/2 inch. If you need finer you could toss it on top of the larger...

$0.99 would be incredible, but even $30 is a huge savings compared to the hassle of building durable frames, sourcing appropriately sized mesh, assembling it all, and hoping it holds together from season to season

(I started with home-built, so I know... visited more seed/farm implement, "Farm and Fleet," and/or "Grainger" stores than I care to admit while sourcing the appropriate mesh).

Wasn't worth the trouble, upon reflection, especially since I am not working any sort of industrial scale.

IMG_20170627_174630631_HDR.jpg I have a set I ordered from Stone Lantern. It is stainless steel about the size of the top of a five gallon bucket. I think it came with five or seven screens that interchange in the ring. I found if I cut the bottom off of a plastic pot just the right size it fits the five gal bucket.

This is probably my backup depending on what happens with the Kaneshin. I think its up to about $30 now anyway, just something cool about a 1970s sifter from Japan thats alluring lol
 
No doubt about that , Johnathan. NOS from Kaneshin would be very alluring to have on hand.

But, yes, a back up to get going ASAP is also worth considering.
 
I built my own. Can use hardware cloth (metal in 1/4-1/2" thickness available at Home Depot). Can use window screen for fines ( I got pet screen to be stronger). Mine are sized to fit over Rubbermaid/cement mixing tubs but @M. Frary has the best idea as he plants in colanders. I have pond baskets or use the mesh to bottom screen grow boxes. Sorry no pics yet.
 
@wireme seems to have the least labor intensive. Fill em up & rock wheel barrow, screens roll too, nice McGuiver screens!!

The coarser one is a plastic circle with the mesh heat embedded into the plastic.
