Top 3 bonsai states in us?

In all honesty, I feel that bonsai, like all other art forms, is artist-driven. Thus, if say Walter moved to Alabama, it would zoom up the charts and I might actually visit. Where as, if most members of my local club moved to Bama, there would be lots more rose bushes sold and photos of grandchildern displayed in that state but I would not be seeing it anytime soon...........So to say that any state is "top" is really ambigious. Are we talking sheer numbers of club members? What about the state with the most bonsai dealers, or the one with the most public exhibits? When I talk bonsai with friends I prefer to talk about the artists I admire..........

Hey...You picking on Alabama down there?;)

I hear Kathy Shaner lives here now...in fact I'm attending an all-day workshop with her on Saturday.

Gary Wood also has ties here...

I guess that puts us somewhere between Omiya and Omaha...

Sounds good to me, everything should have a purpose. Grow your own bubble gum, what a novel idea, do they have any little trees that produce chocolate ?

It should be entirely feesible to determine best native species for Bonsai per state.

Pinus Albicaulis the Creeping Pine looks good for Wyoming.

You would think anyone heading on down to Georgia would see Hickory as the thing to be doing.

You see a lot of California Junipers mentioned,i guess that's Cali's offering.

Delaware? who knows?

Some States could be known for specialisation overnight, others a few decades, some may take hundreds of years to define.

You can't rush these things.

Interesting discussion. Another questions I'm interested in is what states might make the list in the near future?

I think Oregon is going to be a Bonsai hot spot very soon. Things grow amazing there, Michael Hagedorn is established there and I heard rumors that Ryan Neil was thinking about moving there as well as another young guy currently during an apprenticeship in Japan. I hear the Oregon clubs are growing very fast as well.

Yep, coastal Oregon is by far the state with the magic climate. Or the upper part of Northern California, for that matter.

So, the truth is that Cali has many very good artists, as do a few other states. But, the super-heavy weights are spread around the USA [and the world] and we should seek them out to become better ourselves....................sorry to have slighted Bama earlier-I should have used Idaho which is famous for the bonsai spud!

What would you consider a superheavyweight?

John Naka
Harry Hirao
Ben Oki
Ted Matson
Roy Nagatoshi
Kathy Shaner
Jim Gremel
Tosh Sabumaru
Mas Ishii
Mas Imazuma
Kenji Miyata
Boon Manakitivipart
Katsumi Kinoshita
Cheryl Manning
Peter Tea
John Wang
John Thompson
Hideko Metaxis
Johnny Uchida
Sze-Ernie Kuo

First tier artists from Cali.

Second string would still blow away most states.

Your list contains numerous very talented artists who now live in Cali. While some, like the late Mr. Naka, would be a "super heavyweight" in anyone's view, your "first tier" contains some who imHo [note big H] are simply not as "super". I guess this debate is a little like voting in the college football polls each week-you may pick USC and I may select UF..........

What you have ignored is the primary point of my post. I was not debating who "wins at bonsai." The point is that most of the bonsai hobbyists should try to pay attention to the quality artists, learn from their example, and strive to improve their own skills.
