The tree could be mounted on the slab by beginning of July because the root ball was not touched. On really old firm rootballs keto is not necessary, it will not dry out easily. The maple will be located in half to full shade.

Admirable the balance of size among trunk and branches! My comment, too. repotted in leaf

And? Where is the problem? You may have learned something here. Do you think that i am an idiot risking an 8,000 US$ tree because I cannot wait for spring?

No @Walter Pall...you are no idiot! I ponder if your climate is so different than mine...or the same?

I do wonder what season you find yourself in...we are in summer here. Or if a slip pot basically what was done is okay if proper after care given. Which you did mention. As I have planted trees in summer in landscape. With no major rootwork with no ill effect on a tree.

I am just curious...because you do know your stuff. I have a friend who repots while dormant...before spring in the UK...with no concerns of it recovering knowing it will.

Slip potting is okay with proper after care...we do know this. Which using such a fine specimen shows you know and do so with success in mind. Roots looked like not over worked even though now on a slab.

I think the slab just makes a huge statement...that we forget it is a slip pot method.

Beautiful tree! I was curious what you will use to water, if you don't use keto to hold the substrate? Thank you for sharing.

Was there a goal(upcoming show?) you were accomplishing by repotting it at the unorthodox time?

There is absolutely no rush. I did it now because i felt like it and I know for sure it will not do harm.
But you would have to know what you are doing.

Water with rain and a garden hose, like always. With a firm old root ball this will be OK. I have about 40 slabs and rocks in my garden. Have not used keto or similar ever.

I doubt Walter's climate is all that different from yours. Maybe not as hot in the summer but not sure. He really didn't do much to the root system; it is almost completely intact. So this was like a slip pot, except from a pot to a slab.

Beautiful result, @Walter Pall !

Your right when I look back at his original post. Picked up a bug or some ill prepared food at the send off (On mission trip). Been in bed...and overlooked much of the fine details with seeing the slab. The slab completes it like no pot could.

Perhaps, instead of using the word "comment" I should have used the word "question"
This was a honest query of mine, Mr. Pall Sir and I was looking forward to receiving your clarification/justification which I could not discern because of my ignorance...
I didn't have the slightest intention of insulting you and I am really astonished at your reaction...
Anyway, I do apologize if I unitentionally made you feel under question or attack.

I got slightly irritated (not insulted) because I have said everything that has to be said about it right in my first sentences for this thread. Otherwise you have to trust me that I know what I am doing. There are endless bonsai myths. This is not about opinions, this is about facts. Why are gardens being plante the year round all over the world by professional gardeners? Because ist is possible. Only in the bonsai world the myth is that it is impossible.

Walter (I hope I can call you by name), please be patient. People trying to learn, me included, read books and that is what we find there.
You rightfully so from your experience, try to present things from a different point of view. I thank you so much for that.
But when you go against "established truths" it should be no surprise people is puzzled. Then you explain and everything makes sense :)
