Here's what I started with when I repotted in Feb 2016:This looks like there is a nice tree inside, when are you going to wire it?
Love working on Shimpaku, i picked up a large one from Telperion at the Rendezvous. So far just a bit of clean up has been done, Need to sit with it for awhile before beginning.

Here is a survivor! Collected 18 months ago, buds set everywhere, grow box filled with new white roots. Ready to start initial design work.
Sub Alpine Fir, Triple Trunk. Tree was collected early spring 2017, put in wooden box, pure pumice. Will be moving in to the workshop for trunk positioning work this week. Also need to consider apex height on the two smaller trunks. That will be the beginning. Branch selection and placement will wait until those decisions are in place.View attachment 212784View attachment 212784View attachment 212784View attachment 212784View attachment 212784View attachment 212784
Correct! They’re great. I have two of them. Here’s a cargo van full of them: (plus some errant lodgepole pine)Abies lasiocarpa is the latin name right?
there's a few of these knocking about in one of my 'go to' places, i believe this is one right here, the trunk is very rubbery and bendy
Here is a picture of the backbudding to illustrate the comment you posted! The brown buds cover all the bare trunks and most areas of the bare branches that are still living.Correct! They’re great. I have two of them. Here’s a cargo van full of them: (plus some errant lodgepole pine)

After collection they’re sensitive to heat. They’ll let you know when they’ve returned to thriving post-collection by throwing out a ton of backbuds on old wood.
@Riversedgebonsai congrats on the new Shimpaku! I wish I had purchased one from Telperion at the Rendezvous.
OH SO gorgeous!
