I posted the pics of these when I got em and it looked like I would have some flowers. Well the first one opened today! Prunus mume 'Bonita', recently obtained from William Valavanis.

Happy Spring!

If anyone has Ume blossoms this spring post'em here! :D

Nice Bonhe! The first branch is too flat though. Bring it up will you!

My ume finished blooming 2-3 weeks ago. It's got a bunch of little plums already.
Sad. Beauty is fleeting.

Hey Clyde, thanks for posting your ume. I ordered a batch of 'Omoi no Mama' umes from Bill V. earlier this year, but asked that he deliver them in March as that is my usual repotting month. From the looks of your pictures, I should have requested that he sent them earlier, but something to look forward to next year :D

Not actually ume but it is a plum. Third is a pic with it's mother (who had more flowers before last night's storm). Great tasting plums but I don't know what variety it is.

Thanks Si. This year, I plan to let branchlets from secondary branches go up.
My ume has never had fruit!

Did you air layer to get this? I like it. There are a few types of Plum I would like to make Bonsai with. I have not had good success with cuttings, So I'm trying air layering this year.

Nope - it was a volunteer seedling I plucked out of the ground two years ago. Grows fast!

What type of light do you find is best for your Ume? I have had my peaches full sun and they are thriving but my new pruns seem to be getting a lil dry at the tips and it is not a watering isse. Do the prunus like less than full sun?

Yes I have discovered that in a pot ume definitely like filtered or partial sun. Keep in mind I live in sunny Southern California. They still manage to grow like gang busters. My umes in the ground don't seem to mind full sun. And they drink water like crazy. That could be the issue in full sun. I would imagine that I would have to water my ume 3x a day if it were in full sun
