It seems to me that it would be a good move to add some minimum requirements to BonsaiNUT. After three years of joining, one would have to provide an article about a tree that they have taken from nothing to something. Then once a year thereafter. A form of giving back. A notice would appear on your avatar 30 days before it's due. The article would require pictures of the before and pictures moving forward. I am bored as a reader and viewer of far too many people here that never contribute anything and only piss up other peoples threads with politics and offensive language and links to stupid songs.

This place needs a house cleaning and far too many people use this as their personal social forum and totally forget about bonsai. I love the light moderation policy, but some of this crap goes on far too long. Start removing the posts from a thread that have nothing to do with the thread and this place can get back on track, and those that do it would get it. Let it go and the monkeys take over the asylum.

I think we should accept these things for the entertainment they are.

Maybe an Ignore all, except.

But at that.....

Just go read blogs.

No doubt people need to post more tree stuff.

Deleting stupid shit won't make that happen.

My question to you is who gets to decide if it is "something"? @Smoke

This is not a thread for this sort of thing. This is a message to the leader of the site. This part of the forum is called " Forum feedback and suggestions". It is a shout out to fix this place before it's too late. It is going down hill fast. It needs either moderation of keeping the people working with trees and not calling people names and disgracing their country of. we don't need the politics here. It needs to stop.

I suggest you start a thread for your planting in the elm forum. Call it "A forest of elms with all the same size trunks".

I hear you @Smoke , I personally need to up my skills in photographing my work. I will make a point of putting together more threads, mind you the closest thing to real activity in one of my threads was two dudes debating how kotobuki JBP are propagated.

Start your own forum. Then you can implement whatever rules suit you.

Or, if you're truly bored...just go away.

As suggested before - a separate forum for those who can.
Then if the more experienced want to they can help
the new.
Good Day

Im kind of with smoke on this one. Not to the point of making it gated or to force them to play or go away. That and the ones feeding the trolls are often worse then the troll.

Yep, some of this stuff takes the fun away. This is bonsai and plants and the associated, not the news channel. Treat it so, please.
Do a few have to ruin for all?
A lot of hard work went into building this site, respect it!

I understand the sentiment. I am in two clubs that have grown and there those who lament the days when the clubs were small and exclusive and those who want to welcome anyone. It can be difficult to strike a balance between value for the experienced members and openness for the next generation of hobbyists.

I'm not sure how well telling Walter Pall, Adair, Vance, etc. that they have to either write an article once a year or gtfo would be received.

I guess you could make a hidden forum that only unlocks upon invitation only but would those type of folks only hang out in there and reduce their contributions to the community as a whole?

I do get the frustration, though. Some threads do get derailed. Sometimes I derail them, too. It isn't the end of the world. I'm not too keen, though, on heavy handed moderation and deciding who has value. But maybe moving topics to the "proper" forum would be a good compromise? Might help folks avoid things they don't want to read while still providing value for the "stick in a pot" folks who are starting out and could use some friendly advice and encouragement.

I post updates when I can.
Growing is slower for me.
I do love progression threads.
I don’t feel like most readers care about tropicals here anyway.
I feel like I post more for my own reference than to update the readers.
My threads are sort of my own personal journal now.
My post count is not high because I want to add meat and not potatoes to the site. Lol

It takes meat and potatoes to make a good stew.

I take my journey seriously.
When I started I posted my sticks in pots.
I was terrified but I did it.
I’m still here. I have trees I’m not embarrassed of now. I know I can still post a stick but now it will have character.
No one told me to give up so I never did. :)

I like tropicals.
I also think Pics of sticks in pots are good. It is what most of us start with most of the time. There are always great wild trees and competition winners to show us where we are going. Knowing others are trying too is nice.
Progression threads are great, and a wonderful learning tool.
I like the humor and some of the sidetracked threads as well. The political crap, aggressive attitudes, and BS I can just skip over.

I can understand complaints about trolling and some of those way off topic fights that occur, but this suggestion goes far beyond some base moderation.

I've seen that Smoke is constantly demanding this of folks, he is constantly demanding you "post your trees". But then each and every time someone takes the risk of showing them he derides them about how bad they are. So he claims he wants to see your trees, but then it seems those trees have to meet some other unstated requirements. If he only wants to see refined, fully styled and filled out trees, maybe an open forum site full of learning and sharing threads isn't for him. I do not mean to intentionally disrespect him but he clearly isn't one for providing meaningful advice to beginners, only snide comments. Me might provide an answer but it will ALWAYS have some insult attached. It seems folks wanting to learn the basics are beneath him. And for complaining about trolls he will jump into a thread as fast as anyone to throw an insult at someone.

With how easy it is to ignore stuff I can't understand the complaint. Those that have "finished" trees are free to congregate in a particular forum and do what he is asking, so maybe just make a Smoke forum where other suitors can post pictures to please Smoke.

An Internet forum being treated like an educational institution where you have to basically "make the grade" isn't very welcoming. It doesn't seem logical to have a forum site where basic learning is frowned upon, after all that's not how the community is at large. I for one have been helped in lots of topics by having this site which isn't just a bunch of pictures of fine art. If this site was full of progression threads and no real discussion it wouldn't be nearly as meaningful.

This isn't an art gallery, it's an internet forum.
