I got this from another local nursery since closed. They had several established cuttings in 2" pots.
Not the size of my hand when I got it, I just love the change up in colour amongst the other trees on my porch.

Wrong pot, and roots are filling this one up, yay! Will get a new home next year.

Decided to spend the day with this one, and shot a before after video of it while I was at it. Nothing special.
I hate wiring, but this one needs it. Not having small enough aluminum wire on hand
I stuck with the smallest copper wire I had for the most part, reusing one aluminum anchor somewhere.
Broke a few trivial branches with my clumsy techniques, not breaking the wired branch, but other nearby twigs
and a small jin to boot.

I just love this foliage when it's not turning brown. Brings a spark of life to the area all year long.

Still have more to do obviously, but giving us both a break for the rest of the day.
I could've reduced the height, but given the lack of good inner foliage and character not to back bud
I will keep the height it's at now hopefully for some time.
I might name this one Little Lynn, but really don't know that it's a Lynns Golden like my other one.

I'm getting about ready for a pot for this hinoki some time this year I think. If not I can wire it again. Depends on vacation timing actually...

@sorce it's not the typical hinoki foliage colour and could use some pointers. I am a fan or deeper pots like 3"
any ideas on what Earth tone to go with? The pot it's in 10x8x4 (3" ID) fits nicely I like the size.

Wrong pot, right size for my personal taste at this point in time.

I had it comfortably thinned about a month ago, but will need it prior to rewiring again.
Don't ask what I was doing with the 2 straight branches on the right near the apex IDK (last years pictures above)

I'm thinking this colour perhaps? This oval is a bit oversized I think...but what about a more rich cinnamon colour???
There is a little cinnamon in the bark/trunk naturally...and this pot colour sort of compliments, but need another set of eyes on it

... just had to comment when I saw the pix.

IMHO, the 'correct' pot for this is what is visible of the present pot in this pic. I note that this is also roughly per the 'rule' that the pot depth ought to be about the same as the trunk caliper. The depth of the real pot makes the trunk look like a stick, to me.

On the other hand, if you really need the depth, horticulturally, I would look for something akin to a semi-cascade or melon pot. The narrowness of the pot then helps to make the trunk seem thicker, but it comes at the price of possibly making the composition appear unstable. For example, a red pine in the NBF Japanese collection

Precisely. At this time schedule-ly speaking

I actually thought about a cascade pot...for a second. Will broaden my search,
main point Is to get a colour scheme that would benefit.

POST #3---Foliage is 17" high above soil(reduction possible later on) 15" wide with no wire, and base of "trunk" is just under 1" Pot is 10x8x4
@JudyB is one I admire a lot of your pots. Me being contrary to ruling, perhaps if you could overlook size
you could give some feedback on on a couple of good colours to start looking at. I find a couple on amazon, bonsai outlet, and Eastern Leaf that would
fit, but style and colour along with fit evade me so far. I'm just wanting to get out of the brown glaze and tend to the roots before they begin locking out moisture.
I think if I had a couple of colours that were favourable I could narrow my searches down a bit. Some cinnamon to the bark, gold foliage

These ^ two I find disgusting doing a quick bing search. Green colour no, blue no, off white would have to be a better/different design, no glaze.

This one ^ is starting to dial in, but the foliage is green. Should a golden foliage conifer work as well?
Not that I could find this one, but the color is OK I think.

I like the lip on this perhaps lotus style pot for this hinoki.
Lips nestle/wedge into my hands (handles) smooth pots. no lip, slippery...

I like the lotus idea, unglazed. The pot you are sitting the current pot in is ok, but too large.

Thanks Judy! I think what little pink tones that are in that pot you mentioned should pick up on the bark a little, and hopefully go a long way.
A darker brown similar pot is being much easier to find, still searching...

Found one I made an accepted offer on on eBay.
Not sure if it will compliment this tree or not, but has a smaller volume and height than the current pot.
I'm not in a hurry to real the roots down into a 2.5" deep pot yet.

A golden pot for a Golden Hinoki...we shall see when it gets here...

Ok, I got this pot in today like 3 days early, and that's cool given the predicted weather for the month.
It is a bit smaller than the brown glazed pot the hinoki is in presently.
Honestly, I'm thinking the darker brown serves it better, but would like some input from others on that compared to the new pot.

Of course the pot in front of the other one makes the tree dwarfed all the more, but really the I.D. of the pot is 3/4" shorter and 1/2" less depth, 3" tall I.D.

The colour picks up on the bark at most, and I don't see this pot as complimentary to the tree yet.
I could make it fit I'm sure, while I waited on another pot to show up for a different year.
DSC_3242.JPG
I'm elated with the I.D. I love the size...can't help think a darker green tree would work better in this pot though. Any input???

Starting to see a pattern here. This style of pot reminds me of a top hat, I really like it
Thought I might miss the anchor holes, but figure the smaller holes could fracture when torquing the wire down easier than the larger holes?
Maybe no merit to the thought, it's just that, a thought based on feel.

I got her potted up today finally :)

My shimpaku from NEB refused to fit in the pot I bought for it and had searched for months to no avail.
With that pot now available it was put to excellent use today.

Pot may be a little masculine for the hinoki, but for its' 1st non glazed pot, I'm happy with the marriage
📿 📿
Hopefully the tree stops pouting and the feet take bringing us that splendid contrasty "Lynns Golden"-like foliage.
I've had this from a 2" pot till today. It was the size of my fist when I bought it for $6-10 USD.
Bought this pot at the Monastery in Conyers, GA last October.
Now if I could get @sorce to make me a 2 or 3 more like this one...

2 or 3 more like this one..

Yeah!

I have to practice my coil building technique, by the end of the summer I may be able to make some "perfect" ovals. I found this possible in the sun!

I like your final pot choice. I think it compliments the changing foliage colors nicely. I enjoyed your post . thanks

Thanks so much!
It's a pot I hope to get that shimpaku into eventually. Its' roots are a lot bigger than the hinoki and less formidable.

I'm hoping to accentuate or pull on, the cinnamon coloured bark of the hinoki :) I have very very few pots and lots of projects.

I think I have better luck working on my hinoki in August here, but have had life get in the way of bonsai this year
so today being a Veterans Day I'm off work, but rested little as everything I did today was tree related.
DSC_7184.JPG
Most branches need shortening, but was able to reduce some overgrowth where the apex and lower branches were getting very heavy.
For this I'm very happy, as I repotted this May 2020 and for the better.

I like the tree, I think it would shine in a rounded more delicate and femenine pot not so heavy
Thanks Arnold. Ya know, I haven't a single round pot.
I encourage you to read post # 12 about the pot. It was intended for a shimpaku that refused to fit.
It has already been frost bit hard, so starting its Winter coat looking rather shabby really.
