I have collected trees at different times of year generally from working outside sometimes you only have one chance to get something depending on where you're at but being that the tree in question is that my dad's house I am basically in control of when it gets transplanted

I have been hedge shaping it's wild growth this year periodically for backbudding sake since it had long crazy shoot everywhere but now it has basically a bush on top and I was wondering what anyone thought about collecting at this time of year

i outlined its profile in this picture because it was hard to tell what it was looking like with the overgrown background

I wouldn't recommend it... unless it has shallow roots and you can lift the whole thing without reducing the rootball much. Remember, it has to have time to recover so that it will have enough stored energy to survive the winter.

Yeh i suspected as much .was moreso too busy early this season and missed the opportunity and hvae been itchin lol oh well ill wait til next spring.. it will also allow this year's growth to harden off even more considering it was cut down to a stump last year

Hopefully next year's collection has some woody options

It's straight trunk and lack of movement renders it not exactly the ideal specimen but I will still give it a shot next spring .. maybe I should make some chops down into the Earth around the perimeter of the tree is I don't believe I did that yet

Wait. Don't mess with the root system now. Early spring before leaves sprout is the time to dig.

In the mean time, pick up a couple junipers or something from a nursery. This is to scratch that itch to work on something. They key to patience is "MORE TREES".

I'm a "do it". Even before hearing about the straight trunk.

I almost got some things repotted this Full Moon, should have, cuz it been good and rainy, but It's gotta be the next or next one now.

Something that healthy....

If you cut it back hard and leave only healthy buds, it will sit just fine regrowing some roots before it shoots those buds, which should give you plenty of growth to survive it through winter.

If you do it and document it well with good pics, I'd send you a free pot. 2 if it dies.

Sorce

I like the idea of “spading” the perimeter now. Or better yet, sawzall, but spade would work. Without the trauma of a full on collection, this will give plenty of time in the season to regrow more roots on the inside, and collection in the spring should be a breeze.
