I’m here in SD for the week and my family and I just spent the day at the safari park. Great times. Was very happy to get to walk the bonsai pavilion on a very quiet day. Had the area to myself for most of the time. Believe it or not, this was the first opportunity I have had to see a high quality collection of trees. There were some real monsters and som trees from classic masters Naka and Hirao. I took quite a few pics and made a video. I’ll work on getting them unloaded through the afternoon evening. I tried to take a few pics for scale as most of the trees had giant trunks. I particularly liked the final live oak I see and the shimpaku grafted Hollywood juniper, though I really liked them all. Let me know if I need to post the pictures not as attachments for better viewing.

I really liked the Liquid Amber you could see in this bunch. Crazy big trunk and the most textured bark.

it was also interesting to see a tanuki. A rather poorly executed one, but interesting to see still as it was obviously old.

The prostrata juniper forest in these was another favorite.

the olea clumps and deadwood were pretty spectacular.

Here is the bunch with the big live oak. They also had a pomegranate with the craziest twisted deadwood trunk. It was hard to identify the live vein.

Cool! Didn’t even know they had that

Used to go to both zoos all the time, but haven’t gone in 7 yrs

Wonder if the botanical garden over in Balboa has any bonsai

It does! I went 2 years ago, but didn’t get a chance to go into the bonsai area. We had to leave by the time I knew they had one.

Thanks TJ! My wife just passed her boards to become a PA so we are celebrating.

And Honestly. They were all GIANT trees.bigger than I’m used to at least.
Good for her! Looks like a great time celebrating. Thanks for sharing.
