markyscott submitted a new resource:

Inorganic Soil Reference Sheet - This is a reference documenting some of the more commonly used inorganic soil types.

Here is the first resource developed from the thread "Introductory Soil Physics". This is a reference sheet defining common inorganic soil types used in bonsai. It expands on the selection discussed in the thread. It is not a recommendation of what one should use in their garden, rather a description of what the choices are.

Select the hyperlink (anywhere on the green highlighted text) and click on the "download now" button. Or go to the resources tab and follow the link. There are also a series of articles being published in the ABS journal. The first is out already and the next is being published in the current issue.

I don't know any Canadian resources to help you, but here's a link to some US distributors- you might see if they'll ship to Canada.

Have you tried ordering from BC? There are definitely a bunch of mining companies selling on the net. @ghues or @wireme might be able to help you.

You can link a member (in order that she/he gets a notice about you mentioning her/him) by typing @ and then typing the username of the member without space after @ but leaving a space after the name.
For example : @leonardus your username.
While you are typing the username, a small window will appear containing suggested usernames.

Have you tried your local garden centres or sand and gravel supplies? Out west we can get pumice and lava (red/black) in bags from a garden centre (they bring it for our club), other members have found supplies down Island who sell by the pickup load.
Good luck.

The attachment you sent, was a dud. lol

@ghues
Funnily enough, im from the island, but i live in sask atm.
Yes, I frequent most of the garden centers around town.
Ive found the lava rock. I ve read that only the black is suitable, as the red rock typically still contains quite a bit of sulphur. I currently use sea soil, with gaia green living soil blend, with myco ammendment. I like it but would like to familarize myself with a trusted inorganic substrate, for mature specimens.. ill keep hunting, always lol.

Most of us here use SeaSoil for our conifers. I sift mine and use it for my yamadori Hemlock, Shore Pine (some of them are very old and mature). The colour difference between a straight pumice mix light green) and the pumice/SeaSoil mix (dark blue/green) is significant.

Red is fine. Use it all the time. Black is fine too.

Pumice. They ship. And from Canada. Although I suspect you might be able to get a better deal from west coast sources esp. if bought in bulk.

Akadama, You can contact Kim's Nature: http://kimsnature.ca/contact-us-2/

They sell it. Don't know if they'll ship. They're good people there though.

Once again, maybe other westcoasters might be able to direct you to more local sources.

Good luck.
