We will have sale tables for members items, a silent auction table, and brand new (to our shoe) bonsai vendor! We are excited to have Legacy Cork Oaks as the sole vendor for both days. @Housguy, will we see you also?

BUMP! Just a reminder, our ANNUAL (after a 2yr hiatus) Bonsai Show & Sale is this weekend. What better way to spend your weekend than in Santa Barbara! Mid-60s and mostly sunny all weekend! You could pair it with a trip to the botanic garden to see the redwoods.

Really looking forward to meeting the bonsai community up there and if I have time, I would love to see the redwoods! See you on Saturday!

Whew! Whirlwind of a weekend! Unbelievably, I didn’t have have time or forgot to take pictures on my phone of each display. But we did photograph each tree for our online gallery. Unfortunately, the lighting setup doesn’t allow for wider shots of the entire displays. Below are a couple pics stolen from a member’s Instagram (mybonsaijourney to see more). Sorry apparently I can’t link to it since you need a ‘gram account to view.

We had 18 displays from ~12 members, which represents about a 1/3rd of the club.

Here’s mine. I wasn’t able to spend as much time on prepping my trees as work and overall show prep interfered. I pruned the juniper and created the accent at 5am the morning of the show. I also finished the shohin stand the night before, gluing it up and getting some tung oil on it at midnight. I wanted it darker, but didn’t have time. My only complaint about our show space is the poor lighting in the exhibition area.

Prostrata juniper from House of Bonsai purchased in 2013. Borrowed root stand from Ann Erb. I can’t believe I didn’t get a detail of the stand, carved with birds perching on the roots. Absolutely beautiful stand. I was so lucky to borrow it! The stone is a Monterey Formation rounded piece from the beach with amazing fractures. It is actually cut and polished and sits on my desk.

L to R. Willow Leaf ficus borrowed from Jeff Sczechowski (club Pres). My olive from pre-bonsai from Kimura Bonsai Nursery in ~2016 and an apple started by past club president Tom Post circa 2015 (and in a killer @sorce container!)

The RMJ looks like a Ryan Neil styling? Its lovely.

What are people's thoughts on the pot? I like it but I'm not the expert, hahaha.

Also, not trying to take anything away from the display but trying to learn myself but I had a cascade juniper with a suiseki as the accent at the All-State show in Gd Rapids, MI and Mauro said that the order should be reversed as in the rock should be higher and the lower level represents the valley and it should be replaced with maybe something representing that. He even suggested a flowing brook or river so maybe a bronze fish (his words not mine, LOL).

Probably because he is a Mirai student and just worked on the tree up there the previous week! LOL

On the pot, I can’t decide if the lines compliment or distract from the line of the tree. I’m not sure how you get the perfect pot for a tree like this, buy 5 pots at $800 each and pick the best? $$$$ Ouch!

I appreciate the comment on display. But I’d have to reject the strict spatial association based on the fact that I like rocks! With this Rocky Mtn juniper I’d want to suggest the mountains which I guess can be done with a scroll or art (or maybe the tree alone is enough of suggestion). But why can’t there be a rock as an accent without insinuating that one is higher than the other? What if the mountains are small and distant? Maybe a less pointy, more eroded rock? We are obviously appropriating a lot from Japan when we show bonsai. But they have elevated the art of display, so I don’t know how we do it without leaning on and using some aspects that they have proven work while still retaining our own cultural aesthetic.

What about my semi-cascade prostrata display? The stand is a little heavy. But the rock is from the beach. I wanted to give the feel of the coastal juniper at the mountain or even at the beach cliff with the rock and sand representing the coast/beach. Effective or not?
Originally, I wanted an ~11” chunky trunk olive, styled like an old orchard tree gone wild, to be on the right and as a 3rd point the rock with sand (or a smaller rock). Representing the mountains, fields, and beach. But was told the juniper was too large for a 3pt display. It seems like the size appropriateness of a 3 pt display is relative to all the objects and the display space, not the size of one element. But I digress.

thank you for your comment.

Also, a HUGE shout-out to Legacy Cork Oaks and our own @Housguy for taking the time and resources to be the vendor at our show! I was bummed when I missed the big sale Legacy Cork Oaks had at their home several years ago, so I super excited when I was able to snag this sweet cork oak!

These 2 and a corking pine from a few years ago, now make up 1/5 of the best 15 trees with the highest potential in my collection!
