Akadama...My Experience

On the down side tho, from my understanding it is closer to LECA than akadama and LECA is way more readily available and cheaper to boot.
I am not familiar with LECA, so I don't have full knowledge of the comparison, but why do you feel this is a down side.
I would not consider sakadama as a light weight product in my use.

Just repotted with Sakadama in the spring and is holding up alot better than the Akadama.
We will see how it lasts through winter but I can tell it is much harder than 2 different Akadama products I've used.
So far, I like it!
Can you let us know where you got it and maybe a cost shipped pls?

Yes...Superfly is exactly where I got it. 2 bags and a tshirt..free shipping all day long. Superfly was at the MABS Chicago show... nice guys!

Next spring at repot time, I am going to sort my soil with forceps.
Particle of pumice, 2 particles of lava, repeat, one piece of akadama, surround it with smaller pumice, carefully lift with tiny spoon, lay in pot, be sure pot does not shift, after 4 reps one grain of organic, but not on top of a piece of akadama, insert tree, fix in place with epoxy. 🤪

lol just use a measuring scoop and do it volumetrically like the rest of the world

This is the first year I have used akadama, and I can tell a difference. I use akadama/ pumice mix small particles, but I’m still a rookie so that’s just what i see. I’ve seen somewhere that people use small particles on larger trees too, any truth to that? I’ve just tried it on shohin and a little bigger trees, but I can see that sourcing it may be a little harder. I got mine from stone lantern.

Jonas is selling fired akadama now. He adds a little note in the page, which lends me to think he doesn't believe it is optimal for bonsai.

Fired akadama is popular for orchid mixes.

As far as I know all his prices are with shipping included.

I wonder what's the explanation why fired is not optimize for bonsai and good for orchids
