I am not familiar with LECA, so I don't have full knowledge of the comparison, but why do you feel this is a down side.
I would not consider sakadama as a light weight product in my use.

Next spring at repot time, I am going to sort my soil with forceps.
Particle of pumice, 2 particles of lava, repeat, one piece of akadama, surround it with smaller pumice, carefully lift with tiny spoon, lay in pot, be sure pot does not shift, after 4 reps one grain of organic, but not on top of a piece of akadama, insert tree, fix in place with epoxy.

This is the first year I have used akadama, and I can tell a difference. I use akadama/ pumice mix small particles, but I’m still a rookie so that’s just what i see. I’ve seen somewhere that people use small particles on larger trees too, any truth to that? I’ve just tried it on shohin and a little bigger trees, but I can see that sourcing it may be a little harder. I got mine from stone lantern.

Jonas is selling fired akadama now. He adds a little note in the page, which lends me to think he doesn't believe it is optimal for bonsai.

Fired akadama is created by baking akadama at 800 degrees C until the particles harden. The fired particles do not break down like standard akadama. Fired akadama is popular for orchid mixes. Volume : 10 liters
