Thank you and I wish you the very best on building your garden!

Just curious - with the disclaimer that I‘m a VERY amateur carpenter, I’m happy to post plans, a cut list for the benches if you all are interested. They went through several iterations before I was happy with them.

- S
I am interested.

Enjoying seeing the evolution of your garden Scott. Do you intend to have a space to highlight a few trees individually, or are they all on the benches? Just starting to think about plans for my next garden, and I’ve always had some individual stands. Not sure what I want to do this time around.

Hi Brian - I do have a few highlight stands and plan on adding more. I’ll share them next time I’m out at the garden.

Here’s one. I use it for a tall cascade that I have. When I limbed one of the fallen walnut trees, I kept some of the branches. I soaked the end of this one in a bucket of diesel and used motor oil for a couple of days. Then I dug a 2’ hole with a post hole digger, stood the branch and filled the hole with dry concrete. Then I cut it flat at the height I needed and topped it with a slab from another walnut.

Hi Brian. Slowly thawing out. Here’s another highlight stand. This one build out of an old white oak log and a maple slab with a live edge.

I have one more maple slab and a few walnut slabs that I’ll use with other interesting trunk sections.

How has the live-edge slab held up a bench/monkey pole top? I've been debating trying that for the new benches in my garden, but I'm slightly worried about the durability of it when it's getting watered every day

Hey Scott, do you have any experience with hinoki cypress or know of any type that would be good here in central Tx? I keep seeing all these threads with them and would like to know if they would do well here.

I have one here, but I did not try it in Texas. I‘d guess it would have been a difficult species to grow well in Houston and I did not know anyone who grew them there. You might have better luck in your neck of the woods, but I’d advise caution unless you know someone local who can grow them in your climate conditions. However, I don’t recall ever seeing anyone from Austin or Dallas growing them either. Perhaps drop a line to Howard and Sylvia - their Dallas climate might be more similar to yours than was Houston and I’m sure they would have tried them if it were at all possible to grow them there.

It definitely won’t last forever, but I’ll replace it when it is comprimised.

One of the volunteer hats I wear is with the Red Cross. I’ve been working with them for nearly a decade now and it has been a tremendously moving and life-changing experience. Last week’s major windstorm sparked numerous wildfires in Virginia and West Virginia. In Virginia, Page County, Shenandoah County and Hardy County were heavily affected with many homes burned and lives forever altered. I spent two days working in a shelter in Luray with other Red Crossers from the Greater Shenandoah Valley Chapter and the good folks from Page County Department of Social Services. Yesterday we started going into the disaster area to provide assistance to people affected by this major catastrophe. My heart goes out to all who were affected. If this generates the political will to start burying power lines, at least in the most vulnerable areas, perhaps some good will come out of this after all.

Reminds me of the devastation in the Napa Valley area from the downed lines and dry conditions! Prevention and preparation two critical fundamental processes. Hats off to your contribution to assisting these communities. Take care.

All too familiar for Californians. I moved away from California because the fires are a serious quality of life issue that are only getting worse over time. And apparently, getting worse everywhere?

Thanks for your service to the community. I have many friends out that way who are being affected by the fires. Thank God for the rain over the weekend. FWIW, ridges have been burning for a while because of the dry conditions. big fires last fall farther south as well and in preceding years.

It was a good solid rain that lasted for hours. We were cheering at the shelter! Before the rain the fires were 0% contained. Afterwards the fire teams were monitoring hot spots.
