    dawn redwood--where to go?

Lance I will experiment but I take a fairly aggressive cuts with a concave branch cutter. Think some of it is swelling from branch growth.

    dawn redwood--where to go?

Sorce Missed the root thing. Roots grow super fast for these trees. You get large spiral roots in pots that need dealt with. You get large roots even in a air pot or colander. So yes I do impact there growth with aggressive root work to fight there nature. Year one I start in a small air...

    dawn redwood--where to go?

Sorce Its all good I am in the no panties club and take criticism well. Nothing slow about this tree. The battle is slowing them down. Like I said it was my opinion related to my experiments with this tree only. As you can see on the pine in the background I leave the lower branches and...

    dawn redwood--where to go?

Noah I would remove the bottom 1/3 now no mater what you do. I would remove the new branches that grow there every time the pop up. I can see people scratching there heads. The logic with this is so the scaring heals nicely. It is my opinion with the way Dawn Redwoods grow there isn't a big...

    Dawn Redwood, force branch development?

Keaton Do you have a picture? I find most Dawn Redwood stuff I see for sale online is very young material. A 2 1/2 year old tree grown from clipping will stand 6 feet tall and be approaching 1 inch at the base. Most stuff I see online is this age or younger cut back. These trees back bud...

    My latest root over rock.

This project made me wonder why more root over rock folks don't sculpt there own soapstone. It is a really easy material to work with. stuff carves with a butter knife, files, power tolls if you want. Drills easy and wet sands easy. Couple of coats of tung oil and it will shine for a long time.

    My latest root over rock.

Ok so they are just outdoor drink tables but I figured you guy would like these. I just finished making these 2 table2. Started with 2 x 100lbs chunks of soapstone from "Southern Oregon Soapstone". All hand forged steel by me and some nice redwood slabs mounted in the branches. They are needed...

Price of Japanese Black Pine Yamadori?

Its a beach dune environment so you now have trees were they the local trees couldn't grow before. You then lose the grasses an native ground cover.

Price of Japanese Black Pine Yamadori?

Actually some places the black pine is considered a pest in the US. They intentionally spread nematode's per this write up. Not a great plan in my opinion. Personally wouldn't risk collecting trees from this area next to my other trees. I have seen lots of dead trees over the years in this...

    Hard wood teak pot

One note with drilling and sanding teak. Wear a breathing mask eye protection. The dust/oil can cause an allergic reaction for some people.

    Hard wood teak pot

Teak is a really stable wood to begin. I have never had a spear gun warp on me yet. I use stabilized wood for my knives as well. I would use teak as is on a knife and not fear it shrinking due to moister like other woods. I think most knife makers would agree if they have worked teak before...

    Hard wood teak pot

Coat it with a few coats of teak oil and let it dry before using for extra protection. In the long run it will last longer than any other natural wood in my opinion. It resists water well and is used in boat building. I make custom spear guns and teak is the wood of choice. The oil content...

    Soil mix for Olive bonsai

All good its just what I use. Lots of opinions on soil always. I say find what works for your geographic location, rain fall, watering a amount of sun the plants get. I feel like the turface doesn't break down like Akadama. I also feel its more like little hard stones. Basically cheaper...

    Soil mix for Olive bonsai

I use 1/3 turface, 1/3 pumice and 1/3 akadama. I water every day during the summer. In the winter I keep mine indoors and water as the soil drys out depending on how dry the air is.

    Dawn red wood humidity

John I am over in North Springfield. I have some dawn redwoods if you want a fresh rooted clipping from this year I will give you one. You can try it indoors and see how it does before buying a older tree. I would think it will live as long as you got some light for it and keep the soil...

    Dawn Redwood Lighting

I would suspect water as well. I live in VA and keep mine outside year around. Mine get water 2 times a day on an automatic system. If you let them get dry they suffer. If you noticed the tree wilted one day its defiantly a water problem. For soil I use a combo potting soil or compost...

Osoyoung thanks for the replay. I will get them started then. Wanted to start them when the plants are normally putting out new roots. Was worried about the freezing temp affecting them.
